Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

    Perfect for feeding tubes

By Megggs on Jan 7, 2021

My sweet boy was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis, which in turn he got hepatic lipidosis, and had jaundice. He was placed on different medications and a feeding tube was administer. This is the food I was prescribed from the vet specialist to feed him in his tube. This food is wonderful! It is mashed up with no chunks, I add the recommended dose of water (from the specialist) and I mix it in a blender to get it to a milkshake consistancy that will fit down his tube without clogging. It blends so smoothly and perfectly, I have had absolutely NO clogging in the 2 weeks we've been feeding this so far, and it has everything he needs to repair his liver and satisfy his food cravings. Fast Delivery!

By JulieBen on Aug 18, 2020

I had been ordering from ProPlanVetDirect but noticed that Chewy had free shipping and a 5% discount for auto ship which made this order several dollars less than what I was paying! Just as important was how long it took Chewy to contact my Vet for the prescription & ship it out. It took a couple of days & then a couple more to be delivered to me which was outstanding! My cat thanks you, Chewy!

    Disappointed in reordering fee.

By Thor on Jun 11, 2020

I thought the discount was for the monthly case, not for a once in a lifetime discount for scheduling the Plan food on a monthly basis. Now I have a sustaining monthly order with full price each month.

My vet recommended - cat wouldn't eat!

By ladykarol on Jan 22, 2020

Maxie, 13, very thin, ill female, diarrhea problem, wants to eat, IBD however, did not seem to like the Critical Nutrition even though my vet highly recommended it. I am sure other cats do very well - read all the reviews - and one of my sister's cats loved it! Food is very soft, good for cats who have difficulty eating - can be licked up. Doesn't seem to have a good or bad or meaty or fishy smell - kind of neutral. Of course, my healthy cats just wanted to scarf it down!!!!! They don't need it! It is rather expensive - and Chewy only sells by the case - so if you can try it first before buying a whole case, good idea.
