- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

The pieces are too large for small breeds
By DogPaw on Jan 2, 2021
I gave this product 5 stars because my dogs health has improved and she likes the taste of the dog food. Unfortunately, it doesn't come in small bites for little dogs. Purina claims that the size is for small breeds to large breeds, but I disagree. I always add hot water to the dry dog food and let it sit to absorb the water. Then I add the wet food. Personal Note: The dog food doesn't soften enough for a small dog to eat and to mash up, it stays hard for the most part. That doesn't work for my little dog. So, I start by putting the dry food in a blender at EVERY FEEDING to reduce it's size, then I add the hot water to let it absorb and puff up, finally the wet food. She likes it
By Judi on Jan 19, 2021
I have to feed her more than I used to with her grain free food. It's like puffed cereal peices, very light. Shes not itching as much and doesn't have scaley skin anymore. Still poops alot but this food is agreeing with my American Eskimo she feels better. She's allergic to eggs, milk, peas, venison, oat and peanut.

So far so good
By WIkate on Nov 24, 2020
My dog has inflammatory bowel disease and has chronic diarrhea as a result. The only thing that helps is metronidazole antibiotic, but that is not good long term. I have been home cooking her food but still no relief. Our vet suggested this chicken flavor hydrolyzed food for an 8 week trial. I will say, my dog devours it, so it must taste pretty good - especially when she is used to warm cooked fresh meat and veggies! On day two of this food, she seemed to have a bit of an upset stomach, but we kept going and that doesn’t seem to be an ongoing issue. So, fingers crossed this does the trick and helps calm her sensitive tummy! And, thanks to Chewy for getting the food here so quickly!

Great Option
By AshleyS on Jan 14, 2021
This has been the only food my dog has been able to eat without any complications. She was diagnosed with severe allergies and is undergoing immunotherapy. Our vet recommended this food and it has been a great choice for us.

Great for allergies
By Jaxsmommy on Sep 26, 2020
My Jax is a Maltese with food allergies to beef, wheat, pork, eggs, & fish... yep! Try finding a good brand of food without any of those! After searching forever, we came across this Purina formula. We trust Purina, so it was a great find! It’s expensive and a prescription is needed, but it’s worth it because it has calmed his allergies after a few months of eating it. I am so appreciative that Chewy has auto ship and they take care of requesting the prescription from our vet, too! I literally have to do nothing, I get an email when it’s about to ship and receive the bag the next day. Incredible! If I can keep my boys from sneaking Jax table food, we may have his allergies under control. He could My Jax is a Maltese with food allergies to beef, wheat, pork, eggs, & fish... yep! By Oreo on Aug 28, 2020
After several months with stomach issues, huge vet bills and trying all kinds food from Royal Canin GI low fat, home cooked meals to Royal Canin hydrolyzed soy, my 14 year old lab finally got some relief with Purina Pro Plan hydrolyzed Chicken. He remains on flagyl but the difference has really been the food. He loves it as well. So happy he's gained some weight back and has turned the corner for the better.
