Great as a Treat too
I was informed that because of my dog's kidney functions being less than desirable, I should fine a dog food that had less protein than the food I had been giving her for more than ten years. Several foods would give her the kidney protection she needs, and to be honest, I have only fed her the Purina Pro Plan NF dry food since I learned of her condition. She will be retested again in July and we'll find out then if it is helping as I'm led to believe it will, but she loves it and as an added bonus, I'm putting it in her Kongs as an evening treat.
My dog loves this
Vet said dogs all hate this food and mine would probably go on hunger strike, but she loves it. Can't rate its effectiveness in slowing her kidney problem because I'm not a vet and we just switched to it, but it's nice to give her food she likes so much
Our standard poodle likes this and took to it immediately, actually preferring it over his old food. We will do bloodwork in a few weeks to see if it has make any difference to his kidney function. Four stars due to price and not knowing yet if it’s of any medicinal benefit.
Does Not Pass the My Chihuahua Test
My girl loves Purina but not this. For one, way too big a pieces. She is 15 and in kidney failure but wants her dry food. I hope to find something she will eat. She loves Science Diet kd canned food. The dry not so much
Chewy is great, but
I have no problem with Chewy. The delivery was great and the product is exactly as described. Unfortunately, once again, my picky senior dog refuses to eat it even when combined with hamburger or broth.
Started out fine, now he won't eat it
Our 14 year old dog had high kidney values on his recent blood panel, so this seemed like a good idea. He was undergoing treatment at our local vets with antibiotics and other measures to see if that would help bring the values down. There are not very many choices for a renal diet, but ProPlan seemed to have the best rating for palatability. He ate it at first, but once he went off the antibiotics, he won't touch it. I think he ate it initially because he was so sick of being on a homemade bland diet. Now I have to figure out where to donate - all 16 pounds! I should have purchased a 6 pound bag to give it a try first, but kept thinking he might be on this food the rest of his life, so might as well go BIG! I suggest buying a small 6 lb. bag before committing to larger quantities.
Papillon warmed up to this food after trial and error
This dog food was recommended by our vet. We have a 14 1/2 year old Papillon with kidney issues. Our dog would not eat this food after a couple of months of trying. We were about ready to give up when we decided to mix a very small amount of water with it and mix it with our fingers. We were careful to only moisten the food and not make it soupy. As you can now surmise our dog is quite particular with her food. To our surprise she started eating it and this has continued on a regular basis. If this hadn’t worked we were going to add some broth, but at this time it is not necessary.
The joy is gone
My girl has always been food driven, as opposed to toy driven. Morning and night feeding time was the highlight of her day. She would jump for joy like a puppy every single feeding time. And it never mattered what food we fed her. She was delighted to dive into the dish. Recently, however, she was diagnosed with kidney disease and I decided to purchase purina kidney prescription food. I purchased the large bag because of convenience. Who knew she would hate it? Yup. The dog who would jump for joy and dive into a bowl of anything I’d given her over the years. Immediately stopped being excited when I introduced this food. Now I have to coax her to eat. How sad . I tried adding water. I tried mixing it with another food. Nope. I don’t know what it is with this food. It may be healthier for her but it has robbed her of her daily joy.
Fast and easy
Fast and easy ordering - even with prescription food. Great selection in stock and amazing prices! Dog does prefer this food mixed with some of the canned. I was able to order 6 times the amount for about double the vet’s price!
Thank you the option for purchasing prescription foods
Thank you Purina. And of course my vet.. my dog has kidney failure and has had it for two years. With the recommendation of my vet I feed her this dry food plus a canned KD diet which helps with her liver function. I really believe that this has helped extend her life. Plus the mercy of God.
