Once it's heat it up it smells like bacon and my dog loves that smell! My dog is a very picky eater and he never sticks with one of these prescription foods for long! So I'm not sure how long he will stick with this one! I just got it in the mail today. When I first opened the can it looked really ugly like a big roll of hard gel substance. Very hard to take out of the can unlike the hills beef and vegetable stews that he was used to eating yet grew tired of. So at first I put some on a plate and try to give it to him. He took a couple bites of it but did not want it. So instead I gave him the hills chicken renal kibbles and he ate it up quickly. He loved it. And when evening came I tried again with the Purina NF can food. I put some in a bowl , added a little water to it ,heated it up in the microwave and chopped it up. He loved it so much! After licking clean the first bowl He came back for more and I certainly gave it to him! So far he loves this food. It's very hard with renal failure dogs to keep them happy when it comes to feeding. So far so good!
Labrador did not do well on this. I stopped giving it to her. Horrible gas and belly grumbling and burping. Her feet developed yeast type smell and sores between toes. The ingredients are everything most people say to stay away from. Bella is becoming picky due to her kidney issues so I am constantly having to try new food types.
Our longtime vet suggested we try Purina Pro Kidney Function wet food for Daisy..our senior retriever mix...as a former picky eater...I was skeptical..but tried...she loves it !!! Mix it with the same in dry food and eats every bite!!! Thanks Purina and Chewy!!
My dog normally will eat anything so it never occurred to me that she wouldn't eat this. She wants nothing to do with it. I had been hoping if she got hungry enough she would eat it because I have two cases. She went a week of only eating a bite now and then but searching for food everywhere. I finally went to my vet an bought a different brand and she eats it right up. She just doesn't like this brand.
Since my 15 year old dog Tater was diagnosed with Kidney Disease in February of 2022 we have been feeding her 2 different brands of dog food. We wanted her to have a variety but she seems to favor ProPlan. After her latest vet appointment in November the Vet said she was doing fantastic and out doing expectations when first diagnosed.
Can is too large for one meal. And it does not taste the same after being refrigerator were warmed up later. Needs to come in a smaller can
My 16 years old chihuahua has kidney disease. She would eat other brand's k/d diet but never eats this one. Sometimes she can eat dry k/d dog food but never wants to eat this food. This can food seems drier than other brand's. I don't recommend it to picky chihuahuas.
I love this food, as in my picky dog loves it. She eats it without fail and I can even get her to eat stuff she usually turns her nose up at if I mix this in. Like with most KD food watch the fat but I feed really good knowing she is getting a little extra water this way.
My Doodle has kidney damage and this diet was prescribed. I ordered the dry and canned food and she loves it!! In fact, I use the canned food smeared on her licking mat as a treat!
My pup is in kidney and heart failure and can be pretty finicky with food. We use this in a rotation of kidney diets.
