Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

They won’t eat it
By Caroline on Jan 23, 2021
My vet recommended this and said her cats “love it”. She must get a kickback from ProPlan for every case sold because my 5 cats won’t eat it. I mix it half and half with the off-the-shelf canned foods they are used to eating, blending them together, and they won’t touch it. Four of the five need to lose weight, and if they do, it probably won’t be by eating this stuff. If I gave them only this, they would starve to death.

Proven weight loss
By KDPA on Jan 3, 2021
My Maine Coon is a stereotypical lap cat and unlike my other cat, she doesn't run around the house like crazy, so she gained 4 extra pounds even though she was fed a recommended portion of her previous quality food. My vet put her on the OM diet and the formula is proven to help with weight loss. She's already lost 3 of the 4 pounds she gained since she started eating this food and she's still not super active. Here's what I don't like about the canned version. I always buy the bagged dry kibble. A 16-lb bag of OM dry food is approximately $66.00 and lasts me almost 3 months with the daily portion she receives (3/4 cup). A 16-lb bag of OM dry food is approximately $66.00 and lasts me almost 3 months with the daily portion she receives (3/4 cup). I recently purchased a case of the canned version after my cat had a surgical procedure, where serving warmed wet food was easier for her to smell, eat, and administer some liquid medicine. The feeding guidelines for the canned food at her current weight is two 5.5 oz cans per day. At approximately $50.00 a case, I'd need more than two cases to get me through a 30-day month. That price differential is crazy and not affordable, which is a shame. The price on Chewy is comparable with buying the product from the manufacturer's website directly. Also, my cat doesn't enjoy the little bits of rice that's in the canned food, so I end up having to puree it a bit to break that down. I've already spent $100.00 so far to get her through this illness and it's been very helpful for the purpose I needed it for. I might consider feeding her both kinds moving forward so a case may last me longer, but it would still end up being at least an extra $50.00 a month. … more

Kitty loves it & it works wonders
By peachiko on Jan 7, 2021
My cat's not a picky eater at all, so he loves this food. And it's helped him lose 2 lbs in 3 months! Slow progress, but I had to transition him from getting unlimited dry food from his previous owner to this food. He was definitely a little grumpy for the first few weeks to be getting less calories, but now he's adjusted and has more energy than ever, not to mention his fur is looking more shiny and healthy. If you have a chubby cat who will eat anything like mine, then I definitely recommend this.

Wouldn’t eat this flavor - other flavors yes!
By Flower on Jan 5, 2021
My cat Ollie has been on the OM diet for over a year. I usually buy the variety pack with salmon, chicken and turkey flavors which he gobbles up. Purina came out with ocean whitefish snd chicken mix so I thought I would try it. No go! Won’t eat it unless I mix it with something else and then only with much coaxing. I will not purchase this flavor again - I will stick to the other flavors which I recommend- turkey his favorite, salmon next and chicken third

Cat won’t touch this flavor
By Steph on Jan 22, 2021
I guess I didn’t look close enough, I thought this was chunks in gravy like all the rest of the flavors, but it’s paté. My cat will not touch it, and he’s not opposed to paté either. I’ll have to see if my other cats will eat it, but an expensive mistake since the other cats don’t need overweight management.

Mostly great overweight cat food!
By Krob on Feb 23, 2021
Our overweight picky kitty finds this food tasty, but she doesn’t eat the rice which is a big part of this food. This makes calculating her calories a little challenging. Overall— great food!

Great service

This product along with his insulin has made it possible to lower my 3 year old cat to an acceptable range on his last gluclouse test.

Cat-approved, palatable minced formula that works!
By JoJo on Aug 15, 2020
My 9 yr. old cat, Don Pablo was put on Purina OM canned food by his vet 1.5 years ago as he was a few pounds overweight. He’s a big eater and, therefore, has a tendency to put on weight. We had no trouble transitioning him from his old food to the OM because the OM seems to be very palatable. He loves this formula as well as the other three OM flavors offered by Purina. ALL the flavors have a MINCED TEXTURE with small meat chunks mixed in lots of fairly thick gravy. (The few here who have said in their review that this formula is a pate must have it confused with a different food.) Over time, Don Pablo has lost a safe amount of weight and is now much more active. He does not vomit on it, and leaves nicely-formed stool in the litter box every day without fail. His stool isn’t nearly as stinky as it was on his old food—another premium, but non-RX brand and formula. As he ages, I watch for signs of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is very common in older cats. I like that the OM formulas contain less than 1% (dry matter) phosphorous—a mineral that can cause serious problems for a cat with CKD if consumed in excess. I also love that OM canned comes in 4 different flavors to give Don Pablo variety as he enters his senior years. Since he has a tendency to gain weight, we intend to keep him on the OM formula as a maintenance diet long term. A big thanks to Chewy for making this excellent RX food available to purchase! … more
