About Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Health For Dogs

Worried About Your Dog’s Digestion?

Your dog’s gastrointestinal (GI) system helps support the rest of the body by properly digesting food and making sure to extract the nutrients needed for overall health. Your veterinarian is the expert on your dog, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best gastrointestinal health solutions and management options for your pet.

Know Your Dog’s GI System

  1. Stomach: the first part of the GI tract, where inflamation may lead to vomitting.
  2. Small Intestine and Pancreas: where the small intestine is responsible for absorption of nutrients within the diet and the pancreas aids in digestion; inflamation of the pancreas may be cause by a high fat diet or treats.
  3. Large Colon (Tranverse): which is responsible for forming stool.
  4. Large Colon (Descending): which is responsible for forming stool; any alteration to this process may lead to constipation or diarrhea.
  5. Rectum: where stool leaves the body

How Nutrition Can Help

Talk to your vet about your concerns for your pet's GI tract health. Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin GI formula that is:

Easily digestible to help reduce the load on the gastrointestinal tract

Formulated with omega-3 fatty acids, EPA, and DHA to aid digestive health and antioxidants to support a healthy immune system

Highly palatable to encourage eating, even when appetite is decreased due to gastrointestinal upset

Balanced for good digestion, with a blend of fibers and prebiotics to support digestive health

Find The Perfect Balance

With a dry and wet feeding routine, dry food supports positive oral health while wet food supports healthy hydration.

Questions & Answers

24 Customer Questions

Is the cup measurements for feeding instructions a per-day suggestion? Or per-meal? I.e. I feed my dog 2 times per day... it says she gets 2 1/2 cups. Per day? Or per meal? She eats 2 cup 2 times a day and is still on the thin side.
Answer by ChewyDec 03, 2017
The feeding instructions are per day. Consult your prescribing veterinarian to ensure you're feeding the correct amount for your pet's weight.

Where is this made
Answer by ChewyOct 09, 2022
Royal Canin has manufacturing facilities in Nebraska, Missouri, South Dakota and Guelph Canada.

Number of cups in 22 lb bag?
Answer by ChewyJul 26, 2020
There will be approximately 4 cups of kibble per pound. The 8.8 pound bag will have close to 35 cups and the 22 pound bag close to 88 cups.

Does this food help them gain weight?
Answer by ChewyMay 16, 2022
This palatable, digestible dog food supports digestive health with high fat and calorie content, so you can feed your dog small portions to support their sensitive stomach. This also helps underweight dogs or dogs who are eating less get the calories they need. Prebiotics help maintain the balance of good bacteria in the gut. A blend of dietary fibers supports healthy digestion for optimal stool quality. Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, from fish oil help soothe the GI tract. And a precise blend of antioxidants supports a healthy immune system. Due to your pets specific health concern, we recommend consulting your Veterinarian to see what would be the safest fit for your pets current treatment plan.

Sensitive tummy’s

I have two dogs with super sensitive tummy’s. My miniature dachshund loves the little kibbles. My very finicky border collie not so much. Gave the food 5 stars knowing that it’s one of the best foods for them but I do have to doctor it up for the border collie.

Reliably Good

Our 8-yr-old chihuahua has been on this for several years, and now our 11-yr-old terrier mix has been eating this for over a year. Both have no further stomach sensitivities, have maintained their weight and seem to like it. We occasionally mix in some of the canned version of this food as a treat. We're very satisfied with the food.

Only Way to Not Vomit

My 70#, 7 yo boy dog has had chronic vomiting for the last 6 years (ever since I adopted him). We've had every test I can afford to get with no answers. We've tried so many different foods. The only thing that has worked for us is keeping him exclusively on this food and I mean EXCLUSIVELY. We give him the wet GI food to help soften his stool and we freeze the wet food in cubes so he can have a treat bc if we deviate at all, even for a pill pocket, he vomits. I've read other reviews that this food does not work for other dogs and if it's a food allergy, well, that would make sense that it would work for some dogs and not others. I'm just glad this works for us. The taste must be good too bc my girl dog will sneak over and try to steal this food from the boy dog. So now we feed them separately! The prescription requirement is annoying, but its only needed one time basically so I can deal with that. It must be in high demand though because it can be hard to get in so order ahead of time so you don't run out!

Dog sick and in ER

My vet prescribed the Royal Canin GI diet to my 1 y/o mixed breed dog in hopes of solid stool. I began transitioning my dog to the food and immediately noticed even softer stool than usual, but assumed this was just due to a new diet. At the end of the first week and after a full transition to this food, my dog was violently ill. He threw up 8x in 1 hour and was having liquid diarrhea. We brought him to the ER, spent $3k on blood tests, ultrasounds, X-rays - all came back clean. The sickness got worse over the next 24 hours, so we brought him to our vet - still no diagnosis or idea of what was wrong. I finally decided to completely cold turkey this food, and that is when the illness magically disappeared. After both vets told me it was likely not the food and to transition my dog back on, I felt discouraged. I gave my dog 1/4 cup of the Royal Canin GI - within 1 hour, he threw up again. I found an online forum in which 800 owners had the exact same experience! Prescribed food, severe illness, clean vet tests, no answers. Be careful when giving your dog this food! I know it works for many, but our situation was awful.

Excellent prescription dry food

My 5 yr old 13 lb. mix has had some GI issues. Our vet prescribed Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dry/wet for her symptoms. We have been on this dry food for a few months now and am glad to say it is doing its job. Excellent food, she seems to eat it readily, her stools have become regular , though small in caliber, which my vet recently told me was acceptable and often seen when dogs are on high quality digestible foods such as this. Her issues have decreased and appear to be manageable now, so willing to pay the slightly higher price for this prescription formula. Royal canin is a brand that is worth it to us.
