Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your cat's coat. Skin issues in cats can be due to food sensitivities.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a cat of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your cat's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Cat

We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

  • Royal Canin Vet Diet (Duck)

    By on

My cat absolutely loves the duck. She has a very sensitive stomach and has been on this food for over a month with no side affects. She is on both wet and dry duck food and seems to love them. Very expensive food, but if it works will continue to purchase. Less expensive than buying food she won't eat. And Chewy's service is excellent. Thank you.

  • He's gaining weight!

    By on

Freddie is 15 years old and his diet was changed about 6 months ago. His fur is growing back and he has gained much of his weight back. He was SO thin - it's great to see him now. He actually chases his shadow and loves to get outside to bask in the sun!

  • Cats won't touch it.

Not sure why, but my cats won't eat this. Apparently they would rather starve. I have even tried pouring tuna fish water over it and mixing it with fresh ground turkey, with no luck. My dog absolutely loves it, though.

  • Highly recommend

    By on

After several years of trying various prescription cat foods, combined with low dosage of Prednasone to combat gastrointestinal issues and weight loss, an internal specialist recommended PD royal canine. After three days on the canned food, I " celebrated" finding firm stool in the litter box. My cat loves the food and gained a bit of weight back after one week. My cat is more alert and after three weeks, his stool has remained firm. Shipping was overnight and customer service was excellent in verifying the prescription. Hoping to order the dry food PD version as well but it has been temporarily unavailable.

  • Kitten With Food Allergies

    By on

We adopted a 2 month old kitten from our local shelter. After a month with us on some premium kitten food, he still failed to thrive. Our vet did numerous tests to look for causes and everything came up normal or negative - which was good but we still had the same problem of lethargy, abdominal distention and diarrhea. After our vet consulted a feline nutritionist, she recommended an hydrolyzed allergy diet and gave us a few cans of the RC Adult PD to try containing the novel protein of "duck". After only a week, our kitten started making a comeback with the hydrolyzed dry diet. I then introduced him to the can of PD that our vet gave us to try and his body tolerated it and he liked it. When we first got him, he struggled for a month to put on 12 ounces. Now eating the Rx diet he's gaining that every 10 days. With your veterinarian's recommendation I would recommend this food for cats with food allergies. Our little guy loves the flavor and has made a huge improvement in his weight gain, activity level and overall health. … more

  • Quick delivery

    By on

It seemed that as soon as I ordered this special diet for my cat, it was already at my front door. So nice to not have to make a special trip and waste time in going to pick it up. My cat has been on this food her whole life after having had a precursor to cancer tumor when she was 1 1/2 years old. She is now 12.

  • Greaseless D Pate

    By on

I enjoyed the duck. It is not as greasy as some you get in a restaurant, even if they have rendered it and cooked it well. Opening the can is a little "wet", but after that it is all good. Like duck pate.. I put it in a mold and served it with crackers. All good! And thanks for meeting my party deadline. Meow!

  • Great Product Great Service

    By on

first purchase on this site and chewy.com made it a breeze. contacted my vet the same day of purchase and got it to me quickly. My cat has terrible skin allergies that we have been battling for years. This wet food is a very tasty and nutritious alternative to what my cat was originally on and it has been working wonders. In just about a month there has been a noticeable difference in my cats itchiness and i feel that she is a lot more comfortable. Would definitely recommend and will be purchasing again.

  • Great Cat Food

    By on

My cat loves this cat food (duck and green pea) and it loves him. He does not get bad breath with this and he seems healthier than when he was on the other popular vet prescription canned food. I am so hoping that they continue to make this product!!
