Worried About Your Cat’s Skin Health?

Skin health concerns are common and can appear anywhere on your cat’s body. Your veterinarian is the expert on your cat’s health, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best solutions for your pet. This specialized expertise is why Royal Canin works closely with veterinarians to develop formulas that support skin health.

Common Causes of Skin Health Concerns

Environmental Sensitivities

Pollen, plants and dust are environmental factors that can trigger an immune response in some cats.

Food Sensitivities

Your veterinarian may recommend a diet elimination trial to help determine if your pet has a sensitivity to certain proteins in his current diet.

Parasites

Your cat can pick up external parasites such as mites, fleas, ticks and lice from contaminated sources, both indoors and out.

Infection

Kittens, older cats, and cats that have recently been ill may be more susceptible to bacterial infections that can lead to skin health concerns.

How Can Nutrition Help?

Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin Dermatology formula for your cat. These special formulations can:

Support digestive health by regulating movement through the GI tract and supporting balanced digestive flora

Support the skin’s natural protective barrier

Aid cellular health with a complex blend of antioxidants.

Promote healthy skin and coat by providing long chain omega-3 fatty acids in the diet

Find The Perfect Balance

With a dry and wet feeding routine, dry food supports positive oral health while wet food supports healthy hydration.

What state in the United States is this manufactured from? Thank you

Answer by ChewyFeb 06, 2018
Royal Canin is manufactured in Missouri and South Dakota.

Does Royal Canin make a smaller bag of the feline PR that Chewy does not carry?

Answer by ChewyMay 29, 2019
Royal Canin currently manufactures this recipe in an 8.8 pound bag only.

Has the formula or something changed? My cat used to love this, but since the new bag design came out, he is very reluctant to eat it and is practically starving himself.

Answer by ChewyApr 03, 2021
Recently the Selected Protein PR formulas have been optimized, the updated packaging is indicative of this. Each diet is evaluated and formulated by a team of veterinary nutritionists and professionals with years of experience in pet nutrition. Changes in RC's formulations will occur as science and ingredients are updated. Any change is not taken lightly, it is reviewed by our veterinary team and is implemented based on the information from their research. The formula optimization is to best suit the needs of the pets for which they are intended. I have included information below comparing the changes. Selected Protein PR Dry- Formerly Selected Protein Adult PR, simply Adult has been removed from the name. The formula optimization has resulted in a change in the ingredient order, but this will not impact the efficacy of the formula. This diet is now formulated for growth and adult maintenance. While these changes are minimal, sensitive pets may benefit from a diet transition. Our advised transition procedure is included.

Smells like cheap dog food

I'm fully convinced RC doesn't make sample sizes just because they profit more off of a bigger size and claiming it's "veterinary" food even though it's literally

I'm fully convinced RC doesn't make sample sizes just because they profit more off of a bigger size and claiming it's "veterinary" food even though it's literally just food. My cat hated this and I don't even blame him it smells worse than Kirkland dog food. If your cat has a chicken allergy like mine do not get this, please save your money!!! Don't even "try" it. Try the duck and pea (will be arriving soon I'll post a review in a week) or the alligator blue buffalo. My cat bub has been living off of Purina pro plan wet tuna and oatmeal because he is a huge glutton for dry food but doesn't want to even get near this. I wouldn't even call him picky the cat eats plastic when my back is turned ._.

We did not want Blue to just have the wet Protein Pea & Rabbit Formula as it looks like Blue will be on this diet now for life. Blue is 14 years old and has some health problems. This new diet seems to be helping him, no more vomiting and coughing. This is a four-week trial for him and hopefully it continues to work. The Vet said no more of any treats or his previous food, he can only eat this.

We have 5 cats exclusively on PR

We have one cat that is highly allergic to chicken, and two that were in and out of the vet constantly with stomach issues. They had us switch to PR wet and dry

We have one cat that is highly allergic to chicken, and two that were in and out of the vet constantly with stomach issues. They had us switch to PR wet and dry and we haven’t looked back since. They weren’t crazy about the wet so I only give that to them occasionally. It’s been well over a year that they have been on it and they still love the dry. The stomach issues have subsided. One of our Siamese was a little too husky and he slimmed down on the food. All of their coats are shiny and feel great. I do wish they made bigger bag, with 5 cats we go thru about 4 a month.

Great for cats with allergies.

My cat has allergy problems. She's also on Apoquel and Zyrtec. This helped too. Everyone complains about the price, but when you break it down it's less than $2

My cat has allergy problems. She's also on Apoquel and Zyrtec. This helped too. Everyone complains about the price, but when you break it down it's less than $2 per day. I know everyone has different economic situations, but that's not much to help a loved one who needs a special diet. (I must admit, I feel guilt about the rabbits, because I'm a vegetarian, but cats are obligate carnivores.)

Very Pleased

When I got this food in it was vacuumed sealed to my surprise. Which I loved because that means the food stays fresher. My cat has a condition called Rodent Ulcers

When I got this food in it was vacuumed sealed to my surprise. Which I loved because that means the food stays fresher. My cat has a condition called Rodent Ulcers which causes him to have ulcers in his mouth when he eats certain foods and we found out he's allergic to poultry type foods and it makes it hard to find some food he would like because he's also a picky eater and that's not going to harm him as well. So I called his Vet and they recommended this food, but warned me that it's expensive. So I found this food on Chewy and looked at the ingredients and there was No Poultry and it is expensive, but I thought to myself...You know what, my little boy is worth and I'm going to try it on him. I thought he would have to have a transitional period from his original food, but to my surprise he didn't. He took right to it as soon as I opened it and seems to really like it. Which I am so pleased about because I was worried if he would like it. So if you have a cat that has allergies to certain foods and he/she a picky eater like my little boy is give this food a try. I'm sure you will be satisfied and pleased with the results. I know I am an my little boy is worth the expense to keep him happy and healthy.

Royal Canin needs to offer this product in a smaller size which they do not. It only come in 8.8 lb bag. My cat stopped eating it after 4 months because the taste changed. I ordered a new bag and he started eating it right away. An 8.8 lb bag is too large for one cat, but I this is the only food my cat can eat due to a medical condition. Now I'll need to throw out the older bag of food since it's not as fresh. This is an expensive product to have to toss.

Trying different foods for IBD

It’s unfortunate you can’t buy a smaller bag. We bought this bag which is $98 and unfortunately our cat wouldn’t eat it and we only use maybe a cup. We can’t donate

Did the formula change?

My two cats have been eating this for a five years and always used to run to eat it and for the last month to two months it’s like they smell it and are not interested

My two cats have been eating this for a five years and always used to run to eat it and for the last month to two months it’s like they smell it and are not interested. Their appetites have been diminished as well. I also have the wet food versions of this and the duck formulas and they literally refuse to eat it anymore. Got some other type of food just to see if it was them or the food and they had no problem gobbling up the new food. Something seems to have changed?

Trust no more

I have been feeding this to my highly allergic and immune suppressed medical rescue cat for almost two years, by prescription through the vet dermatologist. About

I have been feeding this to my highly allergic and immune suppressed medical rescue cat for almost two years, by prescription through the vet dermatologist. About 3 weeks ago i opened a new bag, poured it into the food bin and discovered contaminating kibble from some other kind of food. It’s a very good thing that i poured the bag out because it might not have been obvious if i just scooped from the bag into his feeder, and he would have been eating contaminated food without my awareness. Most likely he would have flared and had an allergic episode as he’s very sensitive. I only just recently started to use an airtight food storage bin because he would like to bite at the bag if it was left out of the pantry. We’re just so lucky nothing bad happened. I am trying to find a safe alternative for him to get him off of RC mostly because their response to my report of the contamination was nonchalant, casual, like it was no big deal. When i spoke with their customer service they told me I should just return the bag to chewy if my cat doesn’t like it. Didn’t ask for the bag lot number, and didn’t get the issue was not palatability but safety and contamination. He was really annoyed when i insisted he take the lot number from the bag. Unfortunately, when my vet tried to address the issue with their RC rep, they got pretty much the same non-response. This should be unacceptable. For a company that built its reputation on prescription foods, for which it charges quite a handsome price, this is unacceptable. As soon as i can find a safe alternative he will eat, I’m done with RC, so unacceptable. It’s also making me nervous about their canned food, since it’s a soft pate, there’s no way to see what’s in it. Final note, when I called chewy they immediately offered to replace, and required that i return the contaminated bag for their analysis, but it’s not like i heard back from them either. No longer recommended.

Chewy deliver the food promptly. I am pleased with service.

My cat cannot tolerate this supposedly hypo-allergenic food. I wish chewy would carry a greater variety of hypo-allergenic foods.
