Worried About Your Cat’s Skin Health?

Skin health concerns are common and can appear anywhere on your cat’s body. Your veterinarian is the expert on your cat’s health, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best solutions for your pet. This specialized expertise is why Royal Canin works closely with veterinarians to develop formulas that support skin health.

Common Causes of Skin Health Concerns

Environmental Sensitivities

Pollen, plants and dust are environmental factors that can trigger an immune response in some cats.

Food Sensitivities

Your veterinarian may recommend a diet elimination trial to help determine if your pet has a sensitivity to certain proteins in his current diet.

Parasites

Your cat can pick up external parasites such as mites, fleas, ticks and lice from contaminated sources, both indoors and out.

Infection

Kittens, older cats, and cats that have recently been ill may be more susceptible to bacterial infections that can lead to skin health concerns.

How Can Nutrition Help?

Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin Dermatology formula for your cat. These special formulations can:

Support digestive health by regulating movement through the GI tract and supporting balanced digestive flora

Support the skin’s natural protective barrier

Aid cellular health with a complex blend of antioxidants.

Promote healthy skin and coat by providing long chain omega-3 fatty acids in the diet

Find The Perfect Balance

With a dry and wet feeding routine, dry food supports positive oral health while wet food supports healthy hydration.

What is the phosphorus content .. either on a dry matter basis or mg/100 kcal. Thank You.

Answer by SheenaFeb 27, 2024
I called the company (2/2024) and received nutrient analysis information directly from a rep. I was told phos is .92% DMB. This is higher than Chewy customer service answers below. Therefore, if nutrient percentages are critical for your kitty’s health needs, I suggest calling Royal Canin customer support directly for up to date information. Contact phone can be found on the Royal Canin website.

When will this be in stock? It’s the only food my kitten can eat with her severe allergies and I can’t find it anywhere!

Answer by AlixMay 29, 2025
I am another very frustrated cat parent due to RC's inability to manage this properly. As of today (May 29th), my vet indicated the RC rep said there is a severe rabbit issue and will not be back in stock regularly until July. I do not trust that timeframe at all either due to total lack of transparency from RC already.

Is this the hydrolyzed canned food?

Answer by DaisySep 30, 2024
No. This food is not hydrolyzed.

Does this need to be refrigerated after opening? It's a big can that will need to last for several days, if possible. She's a small cat with a small appetite.

Answer by ChewyOct 12, 2018
Once open, Royal Canin recommends using the canned product within 48 hours. The formulators recommend adding a thin layer of water to the top of the can prior to refrigeration to keep the food moist. The food that is left out at room temperature should be discarded after 2 hours. If your pet does not like refrigerated food, try heating it to room temperature by adding warm water.

My sick cats, Amy with beginning kidney failure will not eat this food. She has lost a pound in 2 weeks ignoring this pasty, sticky food. Betty Boop my other senior cat with IBS/colitis will not touch it either. She is a foodie and eats most things fast. Not RC vet diet Pea and Rabbit formula. Do the developers taste this stuff? It's disgusting. I'm very unhappy to have paid over $100 for a case of 'healthy food' to have my cat get worse from not eating. I've been advised to mix it with their favorite foods, I did, no luck. I'm now back to trying to get my Amy to gain some weight and live a little longer. She is in worse condition now than before the RC can food. This last week I returned to her regular food and she has more spirit and energy. I also tried all the other RC renal diet foods through starter packs my vet offered. They dislike all the food, but not as much as Pea and Rabbit.

Better Quality than the Kibble, for now

I have had two medical fosters who need restricted diets for allergy and immune disorder issues. The canned version of this food is high quality and my current medical foster is very happy with it. It is a very finely ground smooth pate with good moisture content with generous jus and aspic, which he loves. It is a staple of his medical diet. Since we have had to shift him off the kibble version of the RC PR prescription because it has been giving him loose and runny stools for almost a year after they made a major ingredient change (they added hydrolyzed soy protein as a main ingredient in early 2025), he is now only eating the pate version which does not contain hydrolyzed soy protein. Having only now become aware of this ingredient change and its correspondence with the onset of his diarrhea, it explains why whenever we had him only on the PR canned his stools were great (for example, he had dental surgery 6 months ago and was eating only pate for 2 weeks, no kibble) but adding the kibble back in brought the diarrhea back. He's now transitioned to BB alligator kibble and his stools are completely healthy and normal again. He seems happy with the combination of RC PR wet and the alligator kibble. So far, RC has not added the HSP to the canned version of PR. If you're also feeding your cat the kibble, and they are having stool issues, save yourself the cost of all the diagnostic testing and ongoing discomfort for your pet, and consider shifting to only feeding the pate for a while to see if it improves. For my cat, removing the kibble saw an immediate positive response, within 2 days. This has shaken my trust in RC, and since they are known for not notifying clients about ingredient changes, I will be watching the label on the RC PR cans like a hawk. Unfortunately, I didn't think it was necessary for the kibble.

My cat gives this food 4 stars because his allergies do best when he eats it, and he prefers it over the special protein diets. Myself, on the other hand, dislike it because at room temperature it sticks to my spoon and when out of the fridge, it sticks worse. That means dealing with stickiness spooning out of the can and again when testing for heat after microwaving briefly on 50% power (7 seconds). I find myself trying to strategically leave it out to warm up naturally, without having it spoil. A pain.

SPECIAL PROTEIN REQUIREMENT

When PR or HF protein was prescribed by my vet, I found there weren't a lot of choices on the market. Royal Canin is one brand that my cat would eat, Blue he would not touch even after weeks of introduction to the new food. Chewy took care of contacting my vet for prescription approval, so that was easy. I'm happy with the healthy results of the food and my cat's reaction, but the price is shockingly high. The price is why I docked one star from my review.

After numerous other vet visits and multiple diagnosis of "it's a behavioural issue" in response to him pooping outside of the litter box, Percy was diagnosed with IBS. We began feeding all our cats this and the "bad behavior " stopped! Tobie, who chronically vomited after eating has stopped that as well. He is a medium hair cat and I was told they vomiting was due to furballs.

Just what the doctor ordered!

One of our cats has digestive problems. Our new vet recommended Royal Canin canned rabbit. She loves it, and although she still throws up, it’s not nearly as much

What we DON'T have here is a failure to communicate!

The exchange over the phone with a human being was superb! Information and instructions were clear and then the delivery was sooner than expected.

She’s eating again!

My Princess was down to five pounds due to food allergies. She loves the P&R and continuously asks for more. Of course she gets as much as she wants.
