What is the ash content in the Royal Canin Urinary SO + Satiety + Calm can food?

Answer by ChewyJan 06, 2026
The ash content is not something Royal Canin can provide for products at this time. Ash is the overall mineral content of the diet. It gets its name because when you combust a kibble (or cook it at a really high temperature) all the matter except the minerals will burn off, and you’re left with a pile of ashes. This thought that a high ash content food contributes to bladder crystals is an outdated one, but still very present in today’s society. We now know that it is certain minerals: phosphorus, magnesium, calcium that contribute to forming these crystals and need to be at optimal levels in the diet to avoid that. If a pet is not a “stone former” then the levels of these minerals will not cause them to do so. However, if they are a “stone former” they will form crystals unless they are put on a therapeutic diet.

My cat had to be put on the special S/O diet food because he gets bladder stones from stress and we tried several different kinds from several different brands and he hated all of them! I talked to my veterinarian’s office and they researched and found particular can food variety which I’ve never seen before and we got a prescription and he ended up loving it. This particular variety has more gravy in it so it’s wetter than the other kinds that he had which were just kind of dried up. It has a better color to it and looks more real, unlike the other varieties which kinda had gray coloring and were hard. It smells better overall. It also has like a gravy pocket in the middle so it really stays moist which he loves. I like to give him a half of can in the morning and helpful hint I do not save the food in the tin can because that really seems to affect the flavor forhim. I put it in a small plastic container with a lid on the top that seals it the texture when it comes out of the fridge is good too. He’ll still eat it, which used to be a problem with the other foods because they’d get even harder after they got cold. This particular variety also is good for calming your cat and it seems to help my cat out quite a bit with that which is nice he does stress. I really hope that Royal Canaan never stops making this particular canned food and doesn’t change it in anyway, because it was really a struggle finding something that he liked because he is the ultimate picky cat. Also, I would like to thank chewy for being so hopeful with everything and getting his food to him quickly!

I have a picky eater with a sensitive stomach and loves dry food. Does not like any wet! However, after a life alterating situation has made him go on a urinary diet. I doubted the cans but he needed to recover. He tried the UR from Purina. Was ok with it but didnt always want it. This stuff though...he LOVES it!! I also add calming powder packets. OBSESSED!! So happy he is back on track and is ok with this wet food as his diet :)

Koshka ate the first two cans no problem

Now Koshka wont touch the pate. Even when I add a little water and make a gravy. She wolfed it down the first two times she ate it. Now she lays her ears back

Now Koshka wont touch the pate. Even when I add a little water and make a gravy. She wolfed it down the first two times she ate it. Now she lays her ears back and turns her back to the food. Have to admit I'm at my wits end try to ensure she eats the vets prescribed food.

Cat adjusted great

Both of my cats are able to eat this prescription diet. Food intended for one cat but both of them enjoy it seems to fill them and last longer than cheaper non-prescription

Both my cats love this one as well. They’re normally so picky so I was surprised to see them finish this food so fast in one sitting. A Few weeks in and they’re not sick of it yet. Also seems to help with the urinary issues for the male one, he stopped peeing on the floor and is back in the litter box thank goodness.

Need to mix this with other cat food

At first our cats loved it, but within a week they would not eat it unless we mixed it with their other cat food.

Binky likes it!

I was cautious about this cat food. My Binky boy is a picky eater. To my delight, not only is it healthy for him, he ate it up.
