How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Great and Fast Service!
By RCVD on Feb 24, 2021
Our Veterinarian prescribed this special food for our dog. Our dog loves it, and she is no longer vomiting. The proof will be in the results at our next doctor visit. We ordered this on a Friday morning and knowing it would require approval from our Vet, I expected it would take a bout a week. You can imagine my shock when it arrived the next day - on a Saturday. Website works great and obtaining approval was a non-issue. And thanks for the new customer coupon code - we will be back.

Good for dogs that need to lose some weight - low fat
By Chipppendales on Feb 1, 2021
My previous Shih Tzu was on this kibble for being overweight when he was 13 years old. He lost 2 lbs within a year. He continued on this diet for another 2 years. He was able to maintain his ideal weight while on this kibble. He got to live for 17 long dog years. Now, my 11 yr old Shih Tzu is now on this prescribed kibbles. She need to lose about 3 lbs. I am hoping for the same result with her. My girl Shih Tzu is a little picky eater so I have to add some bone broth. One complain I have is that this dry food is good for all size breeds, including the small breeds - per the packaging. Finally surrendered to this food
By DonnaR on Jan 26, 2021
I have 2 18mo Cockaliers. From the day we got them from the breeder, they refused to eat his recommended food. He had told us to give local raw honey to lessen allergies which cocker spaniels have. They would lick the honey and leave the food. The vet rec Royal Canin puppy, and they started regurgitating, different from vomiting. The breeder said get them off of that, so I did, went back to his and then they started vomiting. Gave boiled chicken and they tanked. Clearly not tolerating chicken. Vet said Ultamino and they improved some but I was not happy with protein content. Gradually tried Wellness and they got diarrhea, Merrick beef, no chicken. They were on that a while but still would drink I have 2 18mo Cockaliers. From the day we got them from the breeder, they refused to eat his recommended food. I am talking 4-8 times a day respectively. Finally surrendered and put them on this food. They are doing great, almost no vomiting or regurgitation. I’m going to slowly try scrambled egg to get more protein onboard, and perhaps a fish oil supplement for their skin and coat. Yes, if all else fails, I do recommend this dog food. … more

prescription food

I am happy with this food. Had used it before. I am just as happy with your customer service. You all are about the nicest people I have ever dealt with. Your customer service is A++++ in my book. My dog has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. That is the reason I had to change her food. I have dealt with you all for some time now and I cannot thank you enough for being so kind.

FINALLY not throwing Up!
By Derbie on Jan 22, 2021
Our 1-1/2 year old Australian Labradoodle would throw up yellow bile a minimum of once per week and sometimes as much as 4 times per week which started around 6 months of age. We kept trying different types of quality dog food from Nature's Logic to Fromm to even trying a raw diet (which Derbie would NOT even consider!) Everything checked out health wise with our vet. Our vet suggested we try a prescription diet, Royal Canin Vet Diet Gastrointestinal Low Fat Dry Dog Food. We have been on this food now for 2 weeks with no vomit and the transition to this food was very easy. Derbie gobbles this up as soon as it hits the bowl, which she had never done before. Chewy is wonderful!
By Judielin on Jan 28, 2021
I am thrill with the food! My German Shepherd has IBS and this was a recommendation from her vet. It works great for the IBS. Although after being on it for several months, she still seemed hungry. I introduced Blue Buffalo HF Hydrolyzed Salmon to hopefully help with the problem and now I use half and half and we have found the perfect mix. She no longer has problem with IBS and she is satisfied with her meals and her coat looks fantastic. We are also so pleased with Chewy! Great company, super wonderful service!

We've always received 5-star treatment at Chewy's
By Jennifer on Feb 1, 2021
This review is not about the product, but about working with Chewy's in general. As the heading states, we have always received 5-star treatment at Chewy's when ordering, or having to return and item that we miss ordered. There have been two occasions that we have ordered a product that didn't work out for our pet that was suffering from pancreatitis. On both occasions, Chewy's simply had us donate the food to our local shelter. We can't speak highly enough about Chewy's customer service and responsiveness!

perfect for potty problems
By Cecy on Feb 25, 2021
My dog was always at the dr every few months with severe diarrhea. The dr would always put him on this for awhile until his poop returned to normal . This would happen every few months so we just decided to keep him on it and he hasn’t had to go to the dr since we made the change !

Pancreatitis Approved
By Angel on Jan 10, 2021
I had never even heard of a dog having pancreatitis when Stanley was diagnosed. My vet switched him to this food, and it has made a huge difference. It helped with the bloating, vomiting, acid reflux, etc. Not to mention, my dog LOVES meal time now. I always thought he was just not super into meal time—but turns out he just wasn’t feeling the greatest on his other food. Now he’s healthy and gets majorly excited to eat each meal. I can even use this food as treats. No more begging and bribing him to eat!
