Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?
We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.
How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

lovin the food
By mizzkitti on Jan 29, 2021
Our cat was having some serious issues, having very loose stools on and off, was pooping outside her litterbox. She would be fine for a week, then the next week it would start up again. She would ONLY eat one type of wet cat food, I had tried dozens of others and she would only stick her nose up and walk away. Our vet recommended this food, and it's like night and day. She loves this food, and lets me know when her dish is empty. Her stools are perfect, using littler box 100% and she is much happier now. No more tummy issues. She also eats the Royal Canin dry with fiber. So glad we found this food.

Expensive for small cans
By Kathy on Feb 23, 2021
Although my cats loved the GI kitten food, they did not want any part of this one. Not sure why, but it's expensive and they did not like it. Hoping the GI issues are going to clear up soon. It's great that this is available through Chewy, but I won't be purchasing again.

Chunky but not this monkey
By Livy on Jan 30, 2021
Livy didn’t seem to like it as much as a pate style wet food. She would make a big mess when eating it and really it was more like pushing the pieces out of the bowl to get the gravy but refusing to eat the chunks once they left the bowl. Not sure if this would have helped with her IBD but wasn’t eating enough of it to keep trying to feed it to her.

Gentle food
By barbie on Jan 11, 2021
I have several cats with sensitive stomach issues. The regular cat food I was feeding them was not keeping them healthy. Our vet recommended this food. Since we have been feeding them, we have had almost no vomiting and their appearance (coat and eyes) has improved. This food requires a prescription, but it has made all the difference.

Delicious & Healthy
By StephWonda on Jan 7, 2021
Wonda (short for Wonda Woman) LOVES LOVESS AND APPROVES! My baby was sick; nauseous with diarrhea. Poor baby, was having uhohs everywhere in the apt. So vet suggested something Gastrointestinal as she suffers from tummy problems and voila- this wet food was a success and a healthy one! Woop woot! Happy Cat mom.

Finicky eater
By Sammy on Dec 27, 2020
As usual, my cat ate this food that vet prescribed so i ordered a case and now he won't touch it. I wish it was possible to order smaller quantities of prescription food because this happens often and prescription items are pricey. The 3 stars are because of that, not because of quality of food.

Cats LOVE this
By LHKC on Jan 6, 2021
My cats really like this food. They don't need any coaxing or doctoring to eat it all up and it seems to have helped with my younger cat's issues. I feed it to both the younger (10 years) and the oldster (19 years)) and they gobble it up.

Gassy results
By Marlie on Feb 14, 2021
Babies love this food. On the expensive side. Compared ingredients. Can't quite see the difference in regular products that are Non Prescription.
