Normally, Small Pet Select's hay quality is better than other companies, however, I opened the box to find this nasty, wet, decayed hay on top. Threw it right in the compost. Not taking any chances with mold.
We decided to try Orchard Grass since a dear family member turned out to have a Timothy Hay allergy. All 5 piggies dove right in for it. We'll see how the Holidays go. I think the "allergic one" will just stay out of their room. This feed has a soft grass texture. We will continue to offer Timothy Hay between family visits so the piggies' teeth get a good workout.
This is wonderful hay! Soft, does t give you splinters while filling my bunny's hayball. He seems to like it as well, the hayball is empty in 2 days! I will buy this again and highly recommend it.
I have been providing my guinea pigs with Timothy Hay ever since I adopted them. One of my guinea pigs is having teeth problems and I thought about giving them orchard grass hay since it is softer and I am glad he liked it! The product is also a family-owned business and it's even better!
This is as described My 3 Guinea Pigs love it.
The first box we got was great :/ The second box was 30% straw, and my bunny has yet to eat a single piece of any of it. I opened the box in dim light but almost immediately could tell it was wrong by the texture. It's super dry and stiff and I have to pick out huge clumps of hard useless grass. Ironically they put a postcard on top of the box this time :( it feels bad, man. Like a taunt.
All the bunnies really enjoyed this hay! Their ages range from 2-6. As I cleaned their litter boxes, I would catch them in the hay box since they were so eager! Although they enjoyed it, all four bunny’s poop became super dark and uneven in size (compared to golden when eating Oxbow). Dark poop usually means they are getting too much protein.
I always order this brand for my rabbit and it’s her favorite. I usually order off their website but decided to order the bigger pack on chewy this time to get everything at once. Unfortunately the quality is a lot worse than I usually get, I’m not sure why. 2/3 of the box I received today was dust and short strands vs the long fresh strands they usually send me. Not sure if this was just a quality control mistake or if chewy keeps these packages on hand elsewhere and maybe it’s old? Either way, it’s not the worst I’ve ever had but will be ordering direct from seller in the future.
My guinea pigs enjoy the hay and it seems good quality for the price. My problem is the packaging. It's a long flat box with a foldover/tuck in flap (think pizza box) which is a pain with a box this size regardless of the contents. Now you put compressed hay in a box like that with no bag or flaps to help contain the mess while you're removing a portion to feed your animals, and you get hay ALL OVER your living room! I'll buy this hay again, but I'm contemplating repackaging it before I even bring it inside next time.
Arrived quickly in about 3-4 days. I have a pig who barely eats hay to the point where I’ve had to give her vitamins because she won’t eat it. I put this in her cage and man she loved it! She’s been eating it for nearly 30 minutes now! All of my other piggies seem to enjoy it too. I’m a tad nervous about the fact that the hay was thrown into the box without any wrapping around it, and hope that there’s no mites or other bugs picked up through shipping. I’m also hoping the bottom of the box is just as good as the top. I’d say for the price it seems to be good and will last awhile- just hope they keep the same flap open box style and start wrapping the entire outside of the box is some form of plastic for mite and bug control.
