We regularly buy this Hay and my boys like it if it’s a third cutting the second cut is so thick and heavy very difficult for to chop for them. I have two cicada tortoises, and if I do not cut the hay, they can choke on it regardless if it’s secondor third cutting, I will not buy the second cutting again. I will only stick to the third cutting. I wish it was organic. Perhaps it is but it’s not labeled that way. I love the little note cards that they put in the and it’s very sweet packaging.

It's in a whole other league. My pigs don't wanna touch the other stuff.

I've been ordering SPS's hay since about September. Recently, just to double check that I was getting the best stuff for my guinea pigs, I ordered a larger box of Oxbow's timothy hay and Blue Mountain Hay's timothy hay (the version they say is for small pets). And the quality is seriously not even CLOSE. Both of the others were mainly small clippings of hay (like 2 inch pieces) absolutely covered in dust and chaff from top to bottom. The Blue Mountian at least looked green, but Oxbow looked very muted and pale. Small Pet's hay was a fresh green. In one of my pics, you can see the Small Pet hay compared to the other 2. The color difference is more dramatic in person, but you can still see in the pics that the Blue Mountain and the Small Pet are pretty similar in color (more vibrant green) while the box to the right (Oxbow) is a pale, muted green. It's bananas to me that a brand like Oxbow sends out such stale hay. They're supposed to be top-tier. Besides color... Small Pet's hay actually smells like hay, whereas the other ones smell dusty. Not necessarily moldy, but just... Really, dusty is the best word here. My pigs don't want to touch the other hay, not even the fluffy parts the piggies normally love (seed heads, I think they're called). With the Small Pet hay, I only ever get the 12lb boxes. Inevitably, some of the stuff at the bottom of the box isn't usable, which makes sense since it's compressed by all the hay on top of it... And the box is basically overflowing with hay when I open it, so it's a lot of hay. I'm 1000% fine with tossing that little bit at the end because 99% of the hay is beloved by my pigs. But still, it's something to keep in mind. I only ever had an issue with my Small Pet hay once and they quickly resolved my problem. It's this that finally motivated me to write a review about the hay. Not only is the quality of the hay second to none, but it's clear they also stand behind their products.

Best hay I've found, but could use some improvement

I've bought this hay nearly every month for over a year. The 10-lb box usually lasts about 4-5 weeks for my 5-lb pet rabbit. What I like: the quality of the hay

I've bought this hay nearly every month for over a year. The 10-lb box usually lasts about 4-5 weeks for my 5-lb pet rabbit. What I like: the quality of the hay is consistently good, no matter the time of year. There have been 1 or 2 boxes that were slightly subpar in quality. But compared to other companies, Small Pet Select's hay is almost always fresher in smell, texture, and color. The hay has that nice, "crispy"/crunchy texture to it that bunnies love. It is not soft or wilted. This company does not skimp on product -- they really cram as much hay as they possibly can into the 10-lb box. I also like that the packaging is plastic-free. Where there's room for improvement: this hay is SO MESSY. If you reach into the box that the hay comes in, and take out a handful of hay, there is a small explosion of dust and debris. The solution I've found is to transfer about a week's worth of hay into a separate plastic bin. I have to do this outdoors with a mask on, because dust and debris flies everywhere. This is not fun to do when you live in the suburbs of the Midwest and it's winter. I then use that plastic bin on a daily basis to refresh my rabbit's supply. I don't know if there's a way to make the hay "less messy" -- after all, it's hay. But it's a rather tedious process to have to transfer the hay into a separate container to make it usable. I also find that most of the pieces of hay are WAY too long for a regular house rabbit. I would say 60-75% of the hay pieces are over a foot long. This means that I have to take a pair of scissors or shears and cut the hay down to size so that my rabbit can actually eat it. Long story short: quality of hay is great, but it takes a lot of work on the customer's part.

I have tried many brands of hay, but this is the only one that my rabbits will eat!! Other brands including Oxbow are so dusty and the hay itself is broken into such small pieces that it may as well be dust. Small pet select hay comes in a box and most of the dust (minimal amount) settles to the bottom so my buns are always getting the full tasty stems

We used to buy Kaytee Timothy Hay for bunnies - until the last few bags were cut so short, stuffed with hay dust and powder, and messy piles of bits. Cleaning became a nightmare, and my bunnies wouldn't touch that hay any more. NOW we get Small Select (a family farm!), long sweet smelling hay strands that my bunnies love. Support family farms. Better quality and freshness, and they care!

Our donkeys sneak it whenever possible. Timothy Hay was a great purchase for us. So grateful to the producers of Timothy Hay.

Wow, I’m amazed and happy with how my box turned out. I’m only giving it four stars out of five because there’s no plastic bag for the hay. It’s just in the box, so it’s exposed to water damage, shipping materials, and other things. But otherwise, when I opened the box, it was very green and no dust is major score for me . I can tell the difference from Oxbow hay. I’ll definitely be buying this hay more often. In the picture, the left side is SPS and the right is OXBOW. The Oxbow has a good amount of brown.

I hate this stuff so much and so do my piggies. 1. It's just in the box, no bag (s), nothing. 2. It's so entangled in itself that is very hard to get it if the box. 3. One way or another that hay is going all over everywhere in the attempt to get it out of the box. 4. Second cut is really not good. They market the product in such a way that "second cutting" seems like something good when it's really not. 5. There is so much inedible straw like (almost like bedding quality straw) stuff in it is, that my piggies started going potty in it. I'm very grateful that it's nearly gone and I can get the some FIRST CUT Timothy haaay!

Oprah is a 19 yr old feline who is has become a guest with her grandmom in my home. The room she will inhabit gets very chilly in the winter (Mr Clark Kent is Not a fan for other felines in his home). I had a protective wooden screen door fitted to provide ample air circulation & a warm cave bed for Oprah to climb into to sleep snuggly.
