    Excellent 2nd Cutting Hay

    By on

First of all, I think a lot of the negative reviews are from folks who do not know what to expect with 2nd cutting hay. Complaints that it doesn't have big long stalk pieces and fluffy bits tell me these folks are used to 1st cutting hay and are not expecting the difference with 2nd cutting. Timothy grass produces seedheads (fluffy bits) when it matures in late spring. The seedheads appear just in time for the first cutting, which results a more stemmy hay. Because these seedheads are only produced that one time per year, second cutting doesn't have them and is going to have softer pieces. I also must agree with the reviewer who pointed out that hay is going to look different from one season First of all, I think a lot of the negative reviews are from folks who do not know what to expect with 2nd cutting hay. That being said, my rabbits LOVE this hay, they get very excited about it and start munching right away. It smells fresh and sweet, and it's clean. They prefer it over other well known brands of hay and for me it is less expensive. I will definitely continue purchasing it and recommending it. … more

    High Quality Hay

    By on

I've been feeding Sweet Meadow hay and timothy pellets to the buns in my rabbit rescue for about ten years. My exotics vet recommended this brand & I'm so glad he did! Many of the buns I have now are around 10 years old (the oldest is 12!), so it's kept them healthy. It's always been fresh & very high quality second cutting, and the rabbits love it. Not sure why some reviewers had problems, unless their pets were just used to their old brand. New foods should always be introduced slowly, as the grasses growing in a field can vary a lot from brand to brand.

    Mostly brown/black and no fluffies

    By on

I’ve had my guineas for about 2 months now and have been buying hay at my local PetSmart. I figured I’d try to find a cheaper supplier and try to buy in bulk. The bags we get at the store are typically the 90oz Oxbow bags. I purchased this 9 pound box. It seems that there is a very large amount of the hay that is brownish-black. I have had this hay in with my guineas for a little more than a day. They have hardly touched it. They typically will have both of these hay containers refilled every evening. They have knocked down one of the containers and pulled most of the hay out looking for what they want, but they aren’t eating hardly any of it, and they haven’t even touched the other container I’ve had my guineas for about 2 months now and have been buying hay at my local PetSmart. Quality Timothy hay

    By on

I’ve been looking for a quality hay that the guinea pigs will eat and this is a winner! It smells fresh every time the box is opened and I’ve noticed the piggies are consuming more hay with less waste. This purchase was worth every penny.

    Kinda Upset

    By on

I’ve ordered from Sweet Meadow Farm before and usually get the 40z bag of Timothy hay since my 2 guinea pigs are in love with it. It usually only lasts me 2-2.5 weeks so I thought getting the 9lb box would be a better deal. Maybe I should’ve read better but this is not the same hay I get in the 40z bags. This is 2nd cut Timothy hay which is a lot softer than regular Timothy hay and my 2 piggies are not fans at all. They will not touch this hay so here’s to hoping Chewy can help and I didn’t just spend $20 on a 9lb box of hay I’m not going to use.

    My rabbits love it!

    By on

My guys always prefer second cutting hay but it's not always easy to find. (As an aside, hay is a seasonal, natural product, not a manufactured one, and it can be different from year to year even if you buy it from the same company and they buy literally from the same farm. That's just the nature of the beast. It hasn't necessarily been "changed" by anybody.)

    Clumps of Mud

    By on

I had been satisfied with past purchases of Sweet Meadow. However, the last order had clumps of mud and brown pieces. I contacted the company, but had no response. I will try a different brand for my next order.

smells good, soft, looks more natural

    By on

The only complain I have is the lack fluffy pieces at the end of some strands. Idk what they’re called but this is the part of the hay my piggy’s love the most and it lacks this. My piggy’s loved the hay overall and this will probably be the new hay I use since it’s cheap and has a good amount.

    Terrible Hay

    By on

I know reviews seem to be positive for this hay but it is the only hay my piggie Smokey will not eat and he is not fussy. It has an odd smell and isn't exactly green but more brown. The only thing I liked was it was soft and not large pieces. I've used several other brands which Smokey has liked and they all had a very fresh smell like newly cut grass. This hay smells almost like chemicals but I know it says pesticide free so that can't be it. I change hays only because I was looking for a softer hay that was smaller pieces. I was hoping this would be my answer but it's not so in the garbage it goes and I will not buy it again. Waste of money for my Smokey.

The only hay my bunny will eat!

    By on

I found this hay by accident one day when, while driving home in Boston, I popped into a random pet store to pick up hay for my two bunnies. Since then, this is the only hay they will eat. When I moved out of Boston I worried where I would get it and I tried to get them to eat other hay, but they absolutely will not. I've tried everything! I've been ordering online from Sweet Meadow for years now and I'm so excited to see them on Chewy! Now I can add my rabbit's hay to my cat's litter order. Excellent quality, bunnies love it, sweet little farm in central MA!
