Questions & Answers

Is this new “ancient” line chelated like the other Taste of the Wild foods? Is the salmon farmed or fished? Is it tested for mercury? Why is it smoked, is that nutritionally beneficial or just for taste? Thank you!
Answer by ChewyOct 24, 2019
This formula uses chelated minerals. Taste of the Wild uses a blend of wild caught and farmed salmon to promote sustainable fishing. All of the fish that are used in their foods are low mercury species. They utilize a rotisserie process to add flavor.

Not Good for My Dog

I've been feeding my dog Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Salmon dry food and she always had normal stools. I thought I ought to try mixing it with something different so I purchased Taste of the Wild Smoke-Flavored Salmon dry food. I began incrementally adding some Taste of the Wild as instructed, but no matter how little I fed her or how long I did so, her stool was always very soft to runny. Now, I'm stuck with an almost full bag of it. I'd hoped otherwise, I cannot recommend this food.

I had high hopes but sadly, not for us

My three GSDs have to be coaxed to eat this, it will stand out all day, I will add a topper to it, even try adding a can of tuna and still they won't finish their food. In addition my senior girl has been having terrible itching non-stop which I can only attribute to this (yeast) I'm very sad because it had such a fabulous list of ingredients and I m now making rice and quinoa and fish for them and using the sensitive skin and stomach kibble of another brand which appears to be the only way I can make things work.

Not for us

After researching several foods, I decided to switch my two large dogs to this as the ingredients seem great & the reviews are pretty positive. This is also a cheaper alternative to what they were currently on. However, both dogs have had way looser stools than they ever have since starting this food (even after doing a slow switch). They both seem to like the taste though, however they’ve never been picky. My search for the perfect, affordable dog food continues!

Checks all of the boxes

Taste of the Wild Prey checks all of the boxes! Affordable, free of poultry (for allergies), omega 3's, prebiotic, and rich in protein. I have a middle aged Beagle/Foxhound and she loves this formula. We haven't had any issues with allergies or loose stools. Some crumbles towards the bottom of the bag, but that is normal for large bags of food. I love the convenience of ordering online. Way to go!

Good for now

Big dog likes it with no issues. Little dog loved it but upset her stomach even with very slow intro. Switching away from grain free since I believe it caused cardiomyopathy in my little dog. On my 3rd bag, I'll just keep the heart Rx for for my little dog I guess.

Not a favorite

The description of the food sounded good to me however my 3 dogs didn't care for the taste. I had to add topper and kibble was left in the bowl at the end. It may just be my dogs. I didn't notice any tummy upset when switching so that was good.

Wish it would work for my dog

I'm sure this is a very good food and I wish I could continue giving it to my Basset Hound. Unfortunately he has a problem with most foods which tend to upset his tummy and causes gas and very loose stools. We are purchasing it for another doggy pet who is enjoying it, but my Basset will have to continue with his Royal Canin which is also an excellent food and is one that he can manage well. I was looking for a food that is a little cheaper for our budget and Taste of the Wild would have been perfect replacement, but alas...not so for my Bartemious.

Our fur kids like it

We started with the grain free salmon variety but after seeing how high peas were in the ingredients, we moved to this one. The vet was relieved when we discussed the move (no more peas or lentils for our dogs). We have struggled with allergy issues and gastrointestinal issues for a while and we have not had any issues with this food. The picky dog likes it, the fat dog loves it and the one that isn't supposed to eat it also likes it.

Dogs love this

I have been feeding this to my two medium high energy dogs. Australian shepherd mix and border collie/Aussie mix. I haven’t noticed any gas with them(as others have stated). I wanted a good quality dog food that wouldn’t break the bank and still keep my dogs fit. They love the salmon and even our picky one gobbles it right up.

New food

Our girl loves this food! She was having a lot of stomach issues with her previous food and they have resolved since starting this.
