This is an oral tablet that is used to treat diseases of the liver and gallbladder when used as directed by your veterinarian. It may also be used to help remove gallstones that contain cholesterol.
Give Ursodiol only as directed by your veterinarian. Tablets should be given by mouth preferably with food. If you do not understand how to give Ursodiol properly, always consult with your veterinarian.
Ursodiol works by improving the flow of bile into and out of the gallbladder and into the intestine. This prevents bile from building up. If bile builds up, it can be potentially toxic. This medication can also help decrease cholesterol in the bile by reducing production of it in the liver. Ursodiol can also reduce the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food and increases its breakdown which can be especially helpful in removing gallstones that are made if cholesterol.
It can take weeks to months of using Ursodiol in your pet to see improvement in clinical symptoms and lab work.
This medicine has been prescribed for life. I was worried that the pill would be bitter and I was going to be fighting with our dog. That’s not the case. I sandwich her pill with soft/loaf type food and the dog is fine with that. I heard of another method. Put pill in a little marshmallow. I thought this would be my back up plan. Our side effects are non issue.
This medication is great for dogs with liver and/or gallbladder issues. We have used it on several of the older rescue dogs and it has lowered liver values which improves appetite and quality of life. Must have for any dog with elevated liver enzymes!
Causes dog stomach pain, terror at night about 5-6 hours after ingestion. Licks the air, comes closer to me than usual to let me know he's hurting and scared. But it does keep the ALT lower over time. Must be given with food - so he eats lunch, 20 minutes later I give the pill, and within 30 minutes to an hour I feed him again to decrease pain and upset stomach. Moved it to noon instead of dinner meal so he sleeps better at night. Giving full meal before and a second meal right after seems to help.
This last cycle I added the ursadiol into my regular autoship order and moved up the shipment date to immediately, but the pharmacy totally dropped the electronic request. Five (working) days later, I called to find out what is up, and they hadn’t even started working in it. And I had moved the ursadiol to the Chewy pharmacy because you guys are “so efficient”! Frustrating - between that and obtaining my vet’s confirmation on ursodiol, my pet was off the med for two weeks.
Hi friends, first thank you to Chewy for having fair prices and fast delivery! 2nd to everyone asking for a smaller dosage please don't. Typically pet meds are sold by the pill. A 125mg pill would cost about the same as a 250mg for half the product, hence more expensive overall. Furthermore, vets would have to prescribe only the correct dosage. If the manufacturer does start making smaller dosages then prices will increase approximately 80% again for the same quantity of the product. I find it helpful to take kitchen shears and cut it half in the dog bowl that way no product is wasted. It takes all of 30 seconds.
My dog's prescription is for half of a 250mg table twice a day which apparently is a very common dosage for dogs. So why not have 125mg tablets, or at the very least, tablets that are scored for easier splitting? I have to cut them in half with a chef's knife. For the cost of these tablets, the manufacturer should definitely produce them scored for easier splitting. We love the convenience and quick response time of Chewy Pharmacy:-)
Looks like the ability to select a specific quantity was removed to options: 1 tab; 30 tabs; 60 tabs. I split my tab in quarters and try to time the auto-ship with other items. 30 tabs would be 4 month supply, however, i would prefer to order along with my monthly order, which is not possible. Chewy, please consider going back to being able to order a specific quantity.
My pup was prescribed for her gallbladder and liver. It seems to be working. The vet’s price was 3x Chewy’s price. So I order here! Quick delivery, and easy pill to hide in food.
This is the third time I’ve had this prescription filled by Chewy and I have to assume either they started giving out a different brand or the original brand making the medication changed the pill. Splitting them this time was a nightmare. I had to toss several pills because they didn’t split nearly well enough to just give it to her anyway. There is a coating type thing on the pill now that either flaked off or hung on(as seen in the picture). I have to assume the main reason for the problems with splitting were because the pill is more rounded now and wasn’t staying in the splitter very well at all or for whatever reason just became harder to split in general, plus it has some weird coating on the pill that wasn’t previously there(at least not like this). I love Chewy and I love their pharmacy and I really hope the next time I need this filled, this isn’t an issue. I’m not sure I’d get it filled again here if the same thing happens. I’d pay more for another place to make sure the dosage is split correctly by either myself or the pharmacy. Please either change the pill back to the previous brand or add the service of splitting pills for people.
Your pet is likely prescribed less than 250mg of Ursodiol per dose. Unlike some other brands of Ursodiol, these pills are easy to cut and do not crumble during the process.
