what does 'malt' mean? what is the flavor???????????

Barley malt syrup is an unrefined sweetener processed by extraction from sprouted barley. Malt syrup is dark brown, thick and sticky, and possesses a strong distinctive flavor described as "malty". It is about half as sweet as refined white sugar. Barley malt syrup is sometimes used in combination with other natural sweeteners to lend a malt flavor.
My dog has Inflammatory bowel disease and cannot have meat. Is this a vegetarian formula?

This toothpaste contains Sorbitol, Dicalcium Phosphate Anyhydrous, Purified Water, Hydrated Silica, Glycerin, Barley Malt Syrup, Dextrose, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Benzoate, Potassium Thiocyanate, Glucose Oxidase (Aspergillus niger) and Lactoperoxidase.
