What tools do you use to carve?
What are the dos and don’ts of pumpkin carving?
- Do: Take your time and plan out your approach.
- Do: Pick the best-looking side of the pumpkin to carve.
- Don’t: Rush it.
What tips do you have for carving these ‘Hocus Pocus’ designs?
- Outline your design with a v notch tool, and cut away just the skin before making cuts all the way through—that way you get a clean line on the skin, even if you have to clean up the softer part of the pumpkin.
- Cut the smaller shapes first and move on to the larger shapes, so the pumpkin is less likely to lose structural integrity while you work.
- Do the through-cuts before the sections that only remove the skin. To ensure that more light will come through the shallow cuts, scrape away the pumpkin from the inside to make it thinner.
How do you illuminate carved pumpkins?
Pumpkins can be illuminated in several ways:
- For pumpkins with a lot of open cuts: Use a few tea lights or LED tea lights; they give a spooky feel.
- For designs with a lot of cuts only through the skin: Something brighter is better, like a set of battery-operated Christmas lights—or even a bright flashlight.
You can also put a few tea lights around the bottom outside of the pumpkin to throw some light on designs that allow less light to come through.
How do you make pumpkins last longer?
- Clean out the guts really well.
- Give the pumpkin a soak in a bleach and water solution: 1 tbsp bleach to 1 gallon of water
- Soak the finished pumpkin for 30 minutes and air dry.
