Summer Is Pool Party Season—for You and Your Dog

Everyone knows that summer is swimsuit season. But this year, humans aren’t the only ones gearing up for the pool, says Whitney Reece, senior brand manager, private brands at Chewy.

“We’re seeing a huge spike in interest for activities in the outdoors with dogs, especially pool parties—or rather, pool paw-ties,” she says. “There’s a huge trend this summer around dog pools.”

Pair that with other recent party-ready trends like maximalism and “dopamine dressing,” and you’ve got a recipe for some seriously fun pet gear. Reece, who’s raising Doberman Ghost and Standard Poodle Elle in the always pool-ready locale of South Florida, says her favorite drops of the season pair unique, tropics-inspired motifs with functional features.

“It’s the little details,” she says. “The crazy attention to detail is what makes this so much fun.”

Whitney’s Top Pool Paw-ty Picks

Summer Tropical Palms Dress

Of all the new summer gear landing at Chewy, this knit dress for dogs and cats is Reece’s favorite. She loves the maximalist monstera print and bright mix of colors. And as mom to two larger breeds, she says, she appreciates that Frisco’s apparel is designed to accommodate a wide range of sizes, from extra small all the way up to 2XL.

Macaw Bathrobe

Does your pet need a bathrobe? Maybe not—but you might need to see them in one for the cuteness factor alone.

“My Doberman likes to play in the pool, and I can’t wait to put this on him,” Reece says.

Frisco’s new summer bathrobes also come in a flamingo design, but there’s one detail that sets the macaw design apart, Reece says:

“The fact that it has a little tail on the butt is hilarious to me!”

Iguana Neoprene Plush Dog Toy

Iguanas are a common sight in South Florida, and “Ghost goes nuts whenever one ends up on our property,” Reece says.

Of course, Ghost isn’t allowed to play with actual iguanas, so this floating rope toy is the next best thing. Thanks to its neoprene fabric, it floats in water, making it a great pick for playtime in the pool.

Alligator Tug Toy

No, this plush gator toy isn’t pool-approved. But it brings the summertime vibes indoors, thanks to the alligator’s outfit. Look closely and you’ll see that the print of the gator’s shirt matches Reece’s top pick, the Tropical Palms Dress!

“It’s a really cute matching detail,” Reece says.

Plus, she loves that the toy’s design, which loops the rope all the way through the toy rather than just sewing it to the ends, is suitable for rough play, even for larger breeds like hers.

Everything Watermelon

How’s this for cute: A reversible dog harness with one side that looks like the green outside of a watermelon and the other side sporting a print of watermelon slices.

And that’s just one of several watermelon-themed items Reece is loving this summer. There’s also a matching leash, collar, and even utterly adorable watermelon-print pajamas.

Birthday Gear

What better excuse to have a pool party than your pet’s birthday? Even celebratory pet gear has gone tropical this season, including one of Reece’s top picks: a pineapple-shaped birthday hat.

Frisco’s designers went above and beyond to ensure that this hat fits virtually every type of dog ear, Reece says. But if your pet just isn’t into headwear, opt for the equally cute “pool pawty” bandana instead.
