FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications. Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

We source all our compounding ingredients from FDA registered manufacturers and distributors.

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

Yes. Chewy Pharmacy can only dispense medication with a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Will you contact my veterinarian directly to approve my prescription medication?

Yes. If you have selected for us to contact your veterinarian, we will contact them to obtain a valid, patient-specific prescription.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Yes. If you have valid refills on file with Chewy Pharmacy, you can set up an Autoship for medications.

Flavored is Best, but Shake Well

By Fluoxetine on Aug 1, 2021

When my cat first started fluoxetine, I was giving her 0.5cc of unflavored 20mg/5mL, and the medicine was too bitter to the taste and the amount too much that she would cough a little after. I switched her to this because it is flavored (she loves it) and the strength is higher so that she only needs 0.2cc, which is just a small enough amount to keep her from choking it down. Because it is an oral suspension with flavoring, it needs to be shaken, which is no big deal. The only thing better would be to see this drug as a compounded chewable treat as some other medications are on Chewy.

Cat could smell this even in the stinkiest of tunas

By Cassadaga on Apr 10, 2021

My cat began eating around his pills when I tried to hide them in treats, resulting in him getting something like 20 treats before he accidentally would eat his pill. I don’t know why I thought liquid would be easier with this guy. I put it in his wet food and he just refuses to eat. So now I’m wrestling him every night to take it, which takes sometimes an hour or more. The last two nights he whips his head around and spits it out. Maybe this works for everyone but us. I just suspect that the flavoring or scent is turning my cat off it. 3 stars for benefit of doubt.

    You have to shake this

By Motpea on Mar 2, 2021

You have to shake this a lot because the medicine falls out of the suspension. Because of the top not being very tight, I remove the cap, put my finger over the dispenser hole and shake for up to a minute. Then I put the dose on top of some wet food and it usually gets eaten, which is good because capsules are NOT happening. The vet started my 43 lb, 15 year old dog on the 30 mg/ml highly concentrated formula because she won't take pills, no matter how you disguise them. We thought we'd have to put the dog down because she was getting us up multiple times in the night to stand in the living room and bark. We were exhausted. She's typical old: bad hips, cataracts, lost most hearing. But she You have to shake this a lot because the medicine falls out of the suspension. We were asking for sleeping meds and she said "try this." What a difference! Within a week her personality started changing for the better. She stopped snapping at our outstretched hand, she started asking to be petted. Her sleep did improve gradually, sometimes we only get up once to help her the dog door, often we sleep through the night. She seems actually happy, I didn't know she was as so grouchy before- she was never very loving. Holy moly, I would have bought this for years, had I known. … more
