Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Other cat likes it too!
By Julie on Jan 17, 2021
My new young cat has a digestive problem & the vet prescribed this food. It definitely has improved her stools & my other cat likes it too! Vet said it was good for my older cat to eat it too.... so that makes feeding time a lot easier! Recommend the probiotic powder too... they love the food even more with that sprinkled on it. (Also recommended by my vet)

This is the only food my cat can eat
By ElleJay on Jan 5, 2021
I have an FIV+ cat, and Hill's i/d Chicken and Veg Stew is the ONLY wet food he can tolerate (he will eat other wet foods, but regurgitates them soon after). My usual source had their deliveries delayed, so I ordered from Chewy, and received very fast (2 days), well before I was out of food for my kitty. This is a quality cat food. My cat's coat is super soft and he sheds hardly at all, and it's easy for him to maintain a perfect weight -- without being left begging for more food. I adopted him 3 years ago, and he's been eating the stew all that time -- and he still loves it! Including the tiny minced carrots.

Really works!!!
By Benji on Dec 1, 2020
My cat had chronic diarrhea that smelled awful. He was so sick that he would leak a little through the house randomly. He has something wrong with him and IBS medicine worked a little, but this food shocked me. After just two days I noticed his stool changing. After a week on this food the color is normal and it’s a normal shape. Now let’s face it, no poop smells great, but his was a sickening awful scent that carried through the house and lingered. He now smells “normal”. The food itself doesn’t smell like cat food either. It sort of smells like a human could eat it and my cat seems to like it even though it has veggies in it.

Good Food for Cat
By moosemoon on Jan 2, 2021
This guy is in end stage renal failure. All we can do is keep him comfortable and hopefully - eating. He has actually gained weight since he started loving this food. It's about all he eats now. Grateful that we don't have to drive so far to the vet's office to get it.

This food rocks!
By Truebeliever on Dec 26, 2020
This food works AND my cats LOVE IT! My one kitty had diarrhea so bad for 5 days and their vet gave me some of this food as well as Fortiflora probiotic and it worked miracles. They can be picky eaters but they devour this food. Im a true believer!

By suz1catz on Jan 20, 2021

Easy switch
By Isabelle on Jan 15, 2021
I switched my cat from an all-dry-food diet (Hill i/d dry) to this, and she loves it. The goal is to try to cut down on vomiting episodes (She's 15 yrs. old), and so far this is a better choice.

Fantastic flavor
By Kookee on Dec 11, 2020
My cat has pancreatitis! Vet recommended the 5.5 Oz can of I/d chicken! He wouldn’t touch this pâté food! Tried 2.9 Oz can of I/d chicken vegetable stew & he loved it! Love the smaller can cuz if it’s any bigger and it goes in the refrigerator he won’t eat it!

Great stuff
By Chriss on Dec 18, 2020
Rescued a kitten who’s stomach was tore up. She couldn’t hold Anya food down and after the vet prescribed her this food her stomach is no longer inflated and she hasn’t thrown up or shown any signs of diarrhea.

By Specialkitty on Dec 31, 2020
Suzi was having digestive problems and it was nearly impossible to get her to take medicine so we tried this. Thankfully she loves it and is feeling much better.
