How long can an open can of wet dog food be safely stored in the refrigerator?

Answer by ChewyMar 02, 2024
Before opening, store cans in a place where the temperature is between 50-100°F. Do not freeze canned cat or dog food as it can change the texture and taste of the food. Your pet’s bowl should be emptied of moist or canned food not eaten by your cat or dog within 4 hours if the ambient temperature is above 50°F. Opened cans should be stored in the fridge, at temperatures between 40-45°F, for a maximum of 5-7 days. Any cat or dog food remaining after that time should be thrown out.

Is this food good for a pet that has experienced acid reflux?

Answer by ChewyJan 09, 2020
Due to your dogs condition, we'd encourage you to speak to your veterinarian to determine what food would be suit your dogs needs.

Is there a preservative in this food? If so, what is it? Thanks!

Answer by ChewyJul 27, 2018
Hill's does not use preservatives in their formulas as the vacuum seal on the can serves as a preservative.

I’ve been buying this Hills ID dog food for over a decade because it’s the only thing my dog can eat. Its quality has varied A LOT over the last year. I’ve now had 4 cases delivered that are so dry you can hardly get it out of the can. Chewy has kindly replaced them but Hills needs to change something.

We have been ordering through Chewy for a while for my extremely sensitive and pancreatic dog. Almost every order has had dented cans, sometimes not so bad that I won’t use but sometimes they are so bad I won’t use them. Each time I contact Chewy and they do make good with the refund or replacement but I’d rather they fix the problem with packaging instead. I’m contemplating just getting from vet.

Like a new dog!

Poppy scarfed it down. Immediately his runny, yellow stools became hard. His barrel tummy went away and he is playful and walking again. I rescued him at age 11

First of all Hills Prescription I/D obviously changed the recipe in the regular and low fat recipes. It may well have been the cause for a week of my dog’s very loose stools which is annoying. I wish Hills Prescription foods gave a warning when they change their recipe. My dog has always loved this food. However, he is not at all picky about food.

How watery it has become

I used to use this all the time, and now it has become very watery. I have to mix it with the more solid food to give substance. One can was no longer satisfying

I used to use this all the time, and now it has become very watery. I have to mix it with the more solid food to give substance. One can was no longer satisfying my dog because it was mostly water. I don't know if they've changed the recipe or what. Also, the cans are always coming dented, which makes me have to throw a couple away because the top had been busted open.
