These prescription diets are designed to help pets with specific health conditions, providing the right nutrients to support their health. Since they're formulated for specific medical issues, we'd require an approval or prescription to dispense this product.

What method is used to hydrolyze the proteins in this food? (acid hydrolysis, enzyme hydrolysis, ...)

Answer by ChewyOct 01, 2022
During the manufacturing process, chicken and chicken livers have enzymes and water added. This enzymatically breaks the protein bonds into short strings of protein instead of long, intact proteins. This process assures that the protein is broken down so they are too small to trigger an immune response.

I don’t get why they would change this formula when this food is for cats with sensitive stomachs/ allergies. I was never told this was a new formula and I should have been warned before. My cat is FIV+ and this food was working for him since 2021. Now that the formula has changed from original flavor to chicken flavor it’s caused his stool to be loose. I confirmed this by not feeding this for a few days and only feeding him his hydrolyzed dry food. I’m very disappointed because there aren’t many hydrolyzed wet food options but I will be looking for a different one now. Also on the Hills website they are telling the customers who left negative reviews that the new formula is better and they we should introduce it to our cats slowly, maybe say that before we feed them. No warning at all.

This canned diet as well as a dry hydrolyzed diet has assisted tremendously in improving the quality of life for my cat with IBD. My nearly 20 year old gal eats without any problem the canned z/d mixed with warm water to create the consistency of a milk shake. I feel this modification improves the texture of the canned food, which almost seems a bit gel/rubbery -like right out of the can. It’s also easy to add additional probiotic (which many cats with IBD need) to the canned hydrolyzed food. It’s not an inexpensive diet by a long shot, but I believe it’s worth every penny (and the amount of money saved on more veterinary visits/bills probably helps to defray the cost of the food) not only by extending my cat’s life but improving the quality of it.

Great for IBD flares

The consistency of this food leaves a lot to be desired, but thankfully does not irritate an already upset digestive tract. Found it was more appealing for Kitty #1 when warmed up before serving if stored in the fridge. Some water helped with the “peanut butter”consistency. Kitty #2 liked it (doesn’t need it) and would finish off whatever Kitty #1 (had Rx) didn’t eat! Price per can is comparable to high-end cat food brands, but still is expensive. Wish there was a 3oz size available.

My cat has food allergies, this food provides relief while we try to figure out safe foods for him. While he doesn’t love the taste, the product is still incredibly helpful for keeping him comfortable. I like to mash it up with a fork and add a good amount of water and some Hydrolyzed protein treats on top to make it a bit more appetizing to him.

If my cat eats too much of this she pukes but that's her sensitive stomach. I mix about 1/3 of a can with warm water by putting it in a blender bottle and it makes a very smooth liquid for her. I'm trying to hydrate her more and get some extra calories in and this is a great way! "Blends" up perfectly smooth which is the only way she'll eat it.

Not one cat will touch it

No cats will eat this canned prescription food unfortunately. They love the dry version, but will not touch this. Even the foster kitten who eats anything he can

No cats will eat this canned prescription food unfortunately. They love the dry version, but will not touch this. Even the foster kitten who eats anything he can find, (dog food, oatmeal, pecan pie, burritos) won’t touch this food. It’s unfortunate since it is quite expensive and bought by the case.

My baby has ibd and have gone through many food trials and ended up here. He had firm poops with hills biome but would occasionally vomit and diarrhea. I was hopeful with hydrolyzed but it doesn't seem to be working. I slowly transitioned over 9 days and his poop became softer towards the end.

Hill's, what were you thinking? I had been feeding my boy this for 4.5 years to control his food allergies that cause skin lesions. Why ON EARTH would you change a prescription food for food allergies and sensitive stomachs by adding in unnecessary ingredients? Not only does the food now smell awful and have a gross gloopy texture (worse than before, that is), but it caused skin lesions and dis-gust-ing smelly stools and odd litter box behavior. To top it all off, my cat doesn't even like it and will barely eat it. I spent thousands of dollars on this food over the years. No more. So long, Hill's.

Cleo won't eat the canned ZD cat food. She doesn't really like pate cat food but I thought I could mix it with water and she might eat it. She will drink the water that separates from the food solids, but leaves the rest. If I had noticed it was a chicken base, I would not have ordered it. She doesn't like chicken. The only canned food she has eat n in the past is Weruva extra gravy food made from either beef, duck, or lamb.
