Are the openings large enough to allow woodpeckers in

Answer by ChewyMar 23, 2020
The openings for this feeder are suitable for Titmouse, Nuthatch, Chickadee, and Woodpecker species.

Will this deter starlings?

Answer by ChewyJul 26, 2022
The Squirrel-Proof Double Suet Bird Feeder is capable of deterring bully or larger birds such as starlings. A caged feeder can solve a lot of bully bird (and squirrel) problems. The holes in the cage are typically too small for larger bully birds to enter so, the seed remains out of reach.

What is the opening size of the outer wire mesh?

Answer by ChewyMar 29, 2021
The wire squares on this feeder are approximately 1 3/8 inches x 1 3/8 inches.

Is there a trick to getting the lid off? I see that it is supposed to be a screw top but I have done that and I have tried popping the lid off. Help!

Answer by ChewyApr 19, 2021
In order to get the top off, hold the lid while unscrewing the top off and it should allow for the top to disconnect from the screw on the feeder top.

So far, no squirrel has been able to beat it. In fact, they've pretty much quit trying. It took nearly a week for the smaller birds to figure it out but they have. The only downside is the larger suit feeders (full grown hairy woodpeckers and larger) don't seem to be able to get at the suet. Bottom line is the suet lasts a lot longer.

Fave suet feeder

Looove this feeder - bc of the cage we don’t have to put it on our shepherd’s hook w/all the baffles if we don’t want to. Can hang it in a tree w/o worrying about

I bought this as advised to keep black birds from eating at my feeders and killing my song birds. The black birds could poke their big ol beeks and reach all the way through and the worst part is that the song birds would be in the "cage" while they were there. I felt like it was even more dangerous. However it'll make a great feeder for winter birds.

I love the fact that this feeder is squirrel-proof, but I am also concerned because a house sparrow (probably a little too big to move around) got caught yesterday. Its head was caught between two of the spaces. I thought we had lost it...But I was able to push it through, and it flew away. I will keep a closer eye on the feeder...but perhaps the manufacturer should be alerted.

If the darn bears hadn't smashed it so many times that I finally decided to stop trying to fix it (though be DID straighten it back out MANY times), I would not have needed to buy a new one. But I have been very happy with this feeder. I always use "hot" (pepper) suet, so even Mr Bear doesn't want it once he's gotten it in his paws (I hang it from a branch) and the squirrels quickly learned not to bother. But it has been great for our biggest pileated woodpecker to our little nuthatches. I saw a review where someone said birds got caught inside, but seriously, we've used this probably for ten years and never had a bird caught, they just hop in and out through the wires. Before i used hot suet, even the Douglas squirrels went inside to eat! Somehow that was cute enough that I wasn't that upset. But between the "cage" and hot suet, we never have an issue with squirrels... only happy birds!

Suite cage that squirrels can’t get into

Squirrels can’t get in but now use it to get to the other feeders. Will have to move them apart further, they can jump pretty far.
