About This Item

Details

  • Alfalfa Hay is a high-fiber legume forage hay that is sometimes called the "Queen of Forages". Alfalfa Hay is legume hay and the protein, calcium and energy content are higher than in grass hay.
  • Oxbow's Alfalfa Hay is an outstanding feed for young animals. It contains more crude protein, digestible energy, and calcium levels than any other forage.
  • Alfalfa provides the essential calcium necessary for growing bones.
  • Alfalfa is also a source of important minerals, including phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc and selenium.
  • Due to its succulent taste, Oxbow's Alfalfa Hay can be used as an appetite stimulant when an animal is ill or for post-surgical pets.

suitable for adult rabbits too?

Answer by ChewyJun 20, 2021
This hay is suitable for a Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Chinchilla and other small pets.

so since I can't see pictures, is this actually hey? Or is it pellets? Thanks a bunch!

Answer by ChewySep 19, 2019
This food is in the form of hay.

Can adult rabbits have this hay without having other hay? Can they live off of this without pellets?

Answer by ChewyJul 17, 2021
This hay is ideal for growing, pregnant, or nursing pets. It is recommended to mix different grass hays together to enrich your pet’s diet. For mature pets you can offer a pinch of alfalfa as a treat. Seventy percent of your rabbit's diet should be grass hay.

Can this be given to tortoises?

Answer by ChewyJul 31, 2019
Some tortoises are reluctant to eat the timothy hay but will eat alfalfa hay. Try mixing about one part alfalfa hay to three parts timothy hay to get your tortoise switched over to hay.

There were maybe 2 handfuls of actual hay I got 2 bags, both were full to the brim with dust. Very green, looks like grass went through the herb grinder dust and about a handful each of incredibly stiff crunchy hay I don’t know if alfalfa is supposed to be so thick and stemmy but it is The dust is a noticeably greener color than the hay This is the third iteration of me buying a less than 40oz bag of Oxbow hay that is mostly dust, but the most egregious so far. At least the other bags had mostly hay on the top layer. These did not even try. Oxbow, ONLY THE BIG BAGS. Sorry no punctuation apparently that’s not allowed now

The batch I got must have been bad or maybe it’s the large box but it’s almost unusable. I’ve gotten the smaller bags of the same brand and type of hay and it was way less coarse. The consistency is hard for my rabbits to digest and I’m pretty disappointed.

Amazing!!

This was great! The price is steep, but the piggies loved it! They went through the whole bag in 3 days! I bought the same brand in store because they loved it so

I'm very disappointed with this bag of Oxbow alfalfa. It's almost entirely made up of hard, brown stems with very few leaty pieces. This is not the soft, green, leafy alfalfa that small animals can actually eat. My rabbit cannot chew the tough stalks, and is completely unable to chew or eat this. I've bought alfalfa in the past that was soft and fresh, so l know this is not normal quality. Unfortunately, this bag is unusable and feels like a waste of money. I hope Oxbow can improve quality control so customers consistently receive fresh, edible hay. This is sad people are buying this to feed their animals and this is what they are getting.. this is not acceptable.

I was not thrilled to open the box and find the bag not even folded together or sealed. It makes me wonder if I got a used box that was returned or something. I was not thrilled with a bag, not being sealed, indicating that it was fresh and didn’t have somebody else’s hands in it that could cause my guinea pigs issues.

I have had a lot of problems with Oxbow hair recently, throwing away more than 50% of the boxes that I buy because the hay is not good and is the first time I've ever had a bad box of alfalfa hay where it's brown and dry and all of the stocks are like 3feet long

I needed a small bag of Alfalfa to tide us over as we transition to Timmothy Hay. This could have just been very old hay but I highly doubt it. It didn’t look like Alfalfa or smell like alfalfa. There are little flower pieces of alfalfa in the bag but the hay itself if thick and brown nothing like good quality alfalfa
