Growing Animals (under 6 months): Unlimited amounts, plus free choice grass hay. Mature Animals: Occasional small amounts. Nursing Females: Unlimited amounts in addition to free choice grass hay.
Alfalfa Hay should only be offered carefully to mature rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and prairie dogs due to the higher protein and calcium content. Many vets believe that animals prone to kidney stones, bladder stones or calcium crystals in their urine should always avoid alfalfa.
Alfalfa Hay can be used to help animals gain weight and will give a nice shine to their fur. Elderly animals should be fed foods they enjoy, such as alfalfa, when considering quality of life. Alfalfa Hay can be used in small amounts as an appetite stimulant for thin or convalescing animals. Rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas under 6 months of age can be given Alfalfa Hay daily. After 6 months of age an animal should begin a gradual transition to 100% grass hay such as Oat Hay, Western Timothy, Orchard Grass or Bunny Brome.
How much do I feed daily? Alfalfa Hay can be fed daily to growing animals as 25% of their total dietary intake. Adult animals should be limited to a SMALL pinch as a treat.
After 6 months of age an animal should begin a gradual transition to 100% grass hay such as Oat Hay, Western Timothy, Orchard Grass or Bunny Brome.

Dusty is OK
By JoeT on Dec 17, 2020
I've seen several reviews for ALL alfalfa products that complain that the product is too "dusty." Well, this is just the nature of Alfalfa, I'm afraid. My rabbits love it - as a treat - and they pick it up like two little vacuum cleaners. It's been one of their main treats for almost 8 years now. Alfalfa is NOT bedding or nesting hay for rabbits. It's a TREAT. Buy Timothy or Orchard grass should be your rabbit's staple. Anyway, from my experience, there is nothing wrong with this product.

Quality so quick
By Jackson on Jan 25, 2021
The large sizes of rabbit Timothy Hay and Alfalfa hay you are sending is so much better than the smaller bags I was having to purchase in pet stores. It is saving me money and time. And, thanks for your quick deliveries!

Very disappointed....
By Bunchick on Jan 10, 2021
Oxbow use to be a great hay product for my buns....last 2 bags were just a few sticks of hay and the rest is dust. My rabbits won't eat anything but Alfalfa (I know they should be eating Tim Hay, but they won't touch it.) Not wasting my $$$ on Oxbow dust anymore.

great product
By Bk24 on Feb 15, 2021
our five piggies really enjoy this hay. I just wish it would come in a 40oz or 90oz size. The 9 pound is way too big for us to store.

Not Edible
By Nope on Jan 23, 2021
It was a bag of green dust, super disappointing. The guinea pigs didn’t even try to eat the few pieces they could.

Baby guinea pig doesn't like, but doesn't need?
By Kimmich on Sep 30, 2020
I got this hay for baby guinea pig I got as a companion for older boar. Read EVERYWHERE that they need extra calcium and should buy alfalfa hay. Then after I received it, asking how to feed it only to baby and not adult, I am told that the baby doesn't need alfalfa hay and will be find with an adult diet. Baby won't eat this anyway. Adult will. But won't eat his oxbow timothy hay. Not enough seed heads and too grass like.

All dust... you're losing money
By sammy on Sep 17, 2020
I didn't buy this off of chewy, but I've bought it many different times from different places over the past 3 months for my baby bunny and just want to warn other pet parents. About 85% of it is just dust. The rest of it is very short hay. There's just honestly not a lot of hay. The hay smells good and looks good but the amount is about 15% of the bag...and I'm being generous. This usually is the only alfalfa hay in stores, so I get stuck with it, but I'm so tired of my bun's hay being dust with a few pieces of hay at the top.

awesomeness
By katt on Oct 9, 2020
Just as expected. For those who don’t know alfalfa hay is shorter then timothy there for it is “dusty” it comes just as it should, perfect for babies, nursing moms or as a small snack. I didnt believe that it is nine pounds so i weighed it myself and it is just very compressed. Definitely will be purchasing it again
