Because of the importance of moisture in a raw diet, Primal recommends rehydrating this product with water or Primal Raw Goat Milk for optimum nutrition absorption. To rehydrate add 1 tablespoon of water or raw goat milk for every nugget, or 1/4 cup for 4 nuggets. For best rehydrating results, break nuggets into small pieces and mix thoroughly to force moisture into product.
Feed adult cats the equivalent of 2-3% of their body weight in rehydrated food per day.
Transition slowly. Begin by mixing 1/4 parts freeze-dried to 3/4 parts current diet. Gradually increase amount of freeze-dried daily.
Adult Cats: Divide total daily feeding portion into 2 meals.
Kittens and pregnant or lactating females: Divide total daily feeding portion into 3-4 meals.

I make a complete and healthy raw food diet for my two feline companions, and wanted a backup food for power outages and scarce meat availability such as we're having right now with turkey. After investigating every brand of freeze-dried raw food I could find online and with the help of excellent pet-food stores, this product seems to be the best available. BUT - the use of clay in this litter could be a serious problem for any cat prone to constipation, despite the nutrient value in that ingredient. And one of my cats has this issue. BUT - the meat is not "all natural" or "organic", which means the animals have been fed antibiotics, something I avoid with the food I feed my cats. Feeling food with antibiotics can negatively affect their microbiome (intestinal gut microorganisms needed for digestion and strong immune system. BUT - I also feed my cats ORGANIC veggies and other really high nutrient supplements not present in this food. AND - there's no way to know from the package exactly how much vitamin A or D is included, or how much Omega 3, so if I want to continue feeding the high quality supplements I currently supply, I'll just have to guess and pray that I'm not overdosing my cats. So this is the best of what's available, and considering it's the highest priced of all the ones I looked at, it should be the best. I firmly believe "you are what you eat" and that goes for my feline friends, too. Feeding the best you can afford will keep the veterinary bills down and keep them comfortable and healthy.
I bought a few bags to try on my cats and my dog. I feed a lot of cats so I figured this would be a healthy way to bulk up their food, the price of food is insane now and its just hard to keep up. Anyhow I don't understand this. They loved the food in some bags and turned their noses up at other bags. I got my dog the venison, he loved the 1st bag but wont eat the venison from another bag. I dont understand this.
We've been purchasing Primal nuggets for the past four years, but the quality is very inconsistent. What we get usually falls into two categories: 1. 'Good' batches of nuggets that are mostly gray and flake easily. These tend to be more irregularly shaped and almost shaggy looking. When we get these our cats love to eat them, and they rehydrate really easily with just a few strokes with a fork. 2. 'Bad' batches of nuggets that are incredibly dry and hard, and sometimes have an orange tint. They're very rectangular with well-defined edges. These are very difficult to rehydrate and my hand often cramps just trying to rehydrate them (I'm a 33 year old rock climber so I don't think it's just my hand strength). Our cats just won't eat this stuff so I have nothing else to do but throw it out and remake the meal. It used to be that this happened every year or so, but recently it's felt like 1 out of every 4 or 5 bags has this issue. Sometimes the bags are also a mix of good and bad nuggets too. These are pretty expensive so it's really disappointing to have to just throw out this amount of cat food, and for the meantime we'll be switching brands. My only hope is that someone from the company sees this and tries to rectify the issue.
I have had 6-7 bags over the last 2 months that have been orange tinted and/or has a different smell. I got a new batch this week and looks to be more of the same. I was hoping that I just got a bad batch. Unfortunately, my cats won’t touch it now after years of eating this product. (I haven’t been able to change because one of my cats has several conditions and her specialists don’t want me changing her food in fears of triggering multiple flares, but I don’t think I have a choice now.)
After years of living abroad and not being able to find this brand there, we got this little bag of Primal for our baby when we were back. She LOVES it! She's almost 11 years old. She used to love it 7 years ago in any flavor and so does it now at least the turkey flavor; we'll try others afterwards. I don't remember how much water I added before, but be aware that this food would constipate them if you don't add enough liquid. At 1 pm she's anxious for this particular meal, because of the Primal. At another times of the day we feed her dry food from a great brand as well. But the Primal at 1 pm is no doubt the most awaited. Since it's on the expensive side, I just feed her a quarter of a nugget and add a little of canned fish for cats. For that 1/4 nugget I add 2 Tablespoons of water. Anything less would constipate her. This is the kind of food that she never gets bored of. She eats with pleasure, has a great weight, her fur shines, she remains pretty agile, self confident and happy. I've no doubt food has something to do with all that. NOTE: I would give it 5 stars if not were for the price. It's just too high. She would need 7 nuggets daily if this were her only type of meal! Bankrupt immediately haha
Maybe I got the wrong flavor but my cat won’t eat it. He wouldn’t even sniff it after the 1st day of realizing what it was. I figured I could feed it to the strays since it’s super healthy food but even they won’t eat it! Only animal I found that likes it was my pup who ate the old food I put out for the strays before I could clean it up. I’ve heard great things about this food but if the stray cats won’t even eat it….idk about it
We have tried other foods like this (e.g. Stella & Chewy) but our cat continues to love Primal. She prefers the pork most of the time but when she’s being finicky, she really enjoys the turkey. I’ve found that I have to have a few options for her all of the time because she gets burned out on flavors. One thing I like about the turkey flavor is that it’s softer than the pork and super easy to break up.
My cats like it dry and crumbled over their kibble.
my cat normally like these nuggets - but the most recent batch that arrived have a chemical smell and seem like they have either gone off or were sitting in a warehouse filled with chemicals or something. cat is not touching it. very disappointing - especially considering all of my chewy purchases.
About half my cats and foster cats will eat the the turkey if I break it up and serve it dry. When I rehydrate it none of them will touch it. The cats who will eat it dry really love it. I think it is a good product but with cats you never really know till you try it.
