Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

My picky cat is eating
By wagshutch on Feb 21, 2021
Our cat had to be put on a special diet. Initially we tried a Hill's soft food which she refused. She is eating this food and actually seeks it out (it's in a different spot in our house from the other cats' food). She seems to know this is better for her. So far she seems to be doing better!

Worked for my cats IBD
By Works on Feb 17, 2021
Was prescribed this food by my vet for my cat who was uncontrollable vomiting and was skin and bones, she diagnosed him with IBD, he’s doing much better! The only reason it won’t get 5 stars is because it makes his poop SMELL TERRIBLE!! It fills my entire apt when he goes :(

This food was prescribed by the vet. The cat eats it happily and it sits well with him. By the way, I absolutely love Chewy.

Cat loves this food
By Rw06229 on Nov 29, 2020
Our cat has some constipation issues and the vet recommended food with fiber, got a some from a different brand and she wouldn’t eat it, suggested this and the cat loves it, seems to be helping her issue also she doesn’t consume as much of this food so it appears to be filling her up which is a good thing as losing a few pounds would be beneficial.

What the doctor ordered
By Gman on Dec 29, 2020
this is a prescription item that our vet suggested for one of our cats intestinal problem. It does the trick, and is actually more like a treat of him since he still prefers his ONE Salmon, but this is easier on his tummy.

Do NOT buy
By Regretful on Oct 14, 2020
My two sibling cats have GI issues and the male has an intolerance of fish flesh that severely restricts my food choice. In addition, my vet recommends limited ingredient food to help with vomiting. The canned Purina Pro Plan EN helps with the vomiting but the amount I would normally feed no longer satisfies their appetites, plus they eat it reluctantly. I purchased the kibble hoping they could eat it too as the canned food is so expensive. (Not sure why as the ingredients are in my opinion poor quality and they regularly vomit undigested rice.) I bought the kibble to try to supplement the canned -- to satisfy their appetites and save money. I see this same comment in other reviews. Heed it. Will have to increase the amount of canned food fed rather than use the kibble. A financial strain but feeding my cat food that causes the problem it is supposed to solve is not acceptable. As the saying goes I would give this food zero stars but it is not possible. … more
