We have two cats in our household, one that actually needs prescription urinary food after a urinary blockage, and one that has gastrointestinal issues and is super picky. The latter absolutely hated this food. He would meow loudly at meal time, puke up the food shortly after eating it, and was losing weight. The vet said there was nothing medically wrong with him. Our cat literally hated this food that much. Rating three stars because the cat that actually needs prescription diet food didn't care about the taste and it seemed to do what it was meant to do - prevent urinary crystals/blockages from re-occurring. If you have a picky cat though, you may want to buy a small bag first to make sure they will actually eat it.

I switched from the hills urinary rx diet food to this one. It’s mainly for my male cat due to the crystallized pee. He and my female cat absolutely love it. I let them graze feed. I feel like they eat this one more than the hills but they drink water so much! I also give them the Purina s/r wet food every other day to keep them hydrated. I’m concerned with how much they are peeing I feel like it’s good but also it seems too excesssive so I’m trying the hills dry food again.

Warning: High Sodium - Not Compatible With Certain Health Conditions

One of my cats developed struvite crystals so I purchased this food for my cats to try, as some of them appeared to be allergic to something in Hill's dry foods

One of my cats developed struvite crystals so I purchased this food for my cats to try, as some of them appeared to be allergic to something in Hill's dry foods. My vet said they could all eat the same urinary food. However, I have an 18 year old cat with urinary and heart issues (he also has high blood pressure, for which he takes meds) and having had a grandmother with heart trouble, I knew he needed low sodium foods. This food is not it! The lowest sodium food according to a heart healthy food list I found on the Tuft's University website (there is one for cats and one for dogs) is Purina One Urinary Tract dry food and Hill's dry and wet foods are suitable for heart patients, but this food (dry and wet) was not listed on the chart. This food has a warning which I didn't see on the bag - I only saw this after I contacted Purina and a representative sent it to me - that it is not to be used if an animal has certain health issues. The Purina S/O dry has more sodium than the Purina S/O wet foods, but the Purina S/O wet foods have a lot in them as well. The dry Purina S/O contains 3.39 g sodium. The lowest sodium Purina dry urinary food is Purina One Urinary Tract food (non-prescription). The (non-prescription) urinary tract health Purina Pro Plan canned chicken entree canned food is the lowest sodium Purina urinary wet food I have seen so far at 0.97 g of sodium. I would advise not feeding this food (dry or wet) to cats with certain health conditions and I would contact Purina for their latest sodium numbers if this is a concern to you, which is what I did. Purina and Royal Canin are quite sodium heavy, but Purina seems to be the worst for sodium. The heart health chart on the Tuft's University website was incredibly helpful, and I highly recommend it to those of you who have animals with heart issues.

Not only has this food resolved Kreacher's urinary tract crystals, he loves to eat it. This food also successfully dissolved and prevented bladder stones for Zelda, who is now almost 20 years old. She has been on Purina UR most of her life, when diagnosed with a bladder stone. They both love the food, both dry and canned.

I dreaded having to change Her Majesty from the dry food she's always preferred (and refused to change from in past attempts) to doctor-demanded dietary kibble, but she immediately nom-nomed it. She can get to the old brand, but prefers her Purina Pro Plan Vet Diet.

My cat had a urinary blockage that required an emergency trip to the vet and resulted in a stay for a few days. He was on meds while recovering but the doc eventually wanted his condition managed just by food. He has always been a very picky eater but seems to love this one and he seems to be having no urinary issues in the first few months of being on this food. Although it’s expensive it seems to be worth it.

I'm not sure the difference between this and the Royal Canin or Hills dry food but while my cat likes this he is SO hungry after. I usually add water to it to try to fill him up more but it doesn't do much so we're hoping to switch to just the Hills Prescription Diet. This one is cheaper but we're not enjoying the dumpster diving and basically food aggression this one leaves us with. Other than that he had no issues eating it.
