Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |
Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?
We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.
How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Not for Us!
By Donna on Feb 17, 2021
My cat HATED this, and he is not a picky eater. When I opened the can, I thought it looked dark and gross. Maybe it was a fluke, and it doesn't always look so disgusting. Wish you could try smaller cans and smaller packages, because $50+ is a lot of money to waste in my household.

She loves it
By SmudgeT on Feb 12, 2021
My 21 yr old girl loves this food & also liked the Purina Renal diet, after turning down the Hills & Royal Canin prescription varieties. I can always count on Purina. Thank you!

My cats’ preference
By Scrumpy on Feb 25, 2021
This is their preferred food by far. Has a little gravy for George. Easy to divide for 2 cats. I just serve as a treat. Use dry form for ad lib consumption

Pate flavor not good
By Goodfellas201cats on Jan 9, 2021
My cat romeo would not eat the pate wet prescription food. The color of the food looks so bad I actually thought it was rancid. I'm stuck with a case of this food and it's not cheap. Thank God he likes the other two flavors.

By endia on Dec 28, 2020
Marz has had some difficulties with keeping UTI's away till we got this food recommended to us by his vet! We were so worried about him getting blocked and having to take him through use of a catheter, but luckily this food does the charm so far! Going to add this to the other cats' diet asap. <3

Purina UR St/ox
By Kittymom on Dec 31, 2020
My boy likes both the shreds and the pate. It is easier for me to portion the pate for him so will probably only order that in the future.

I was very please with the prompt delivery of my order. Much better than always wondering if my vet will have it in stock. I will continue to choose Chewy!

Kitty loves it!
By GraysonsMom on Sep 2, 2020
My six year old male absolutely devours this food and begs for mealtimes! He loves this even more than the Hill's I used to feed him. And as always, Chewy is awesome, they under promise and over deliver!

He loves it
By Gato on Jul 19, 2020
My Senior cat has urinary problems and was beginning to eat less and his coat was starting to look greasy. He was already eating the kibble associated with this food, so I decided add a tablespoon of this to his kibble. He eats it all! He is king of the house again over my other 3 cats. All boys! Being the smallest of the 4, he absolutely has the energy now to keep everyone in line.

Same label, different food
By Nebacaduzer on Aug 4, 2020
The label on the paté and the label on the nuggets are almost identical. Change one label to better identify the differences. Otherwise this is the only good my sick kitty can eat. I am glad it is available and easy to get with an RX.
