Can another cat (without special diet) eat this?
Answer by ChewyJan 25, 2018
Since this is a prescription food formulated to meet specific diet restrictions from known health issues, this food should not be fed to any other animal than the one prescribed due to the restriction of specific nutrients. Prescription diets can be detrimental to an otherwise healthy pet if that pet doesn't have the ailment for which the food is designed.

My 2 cats have been eating the regular Royal Canin urinary cat food for several years now, they love it but at least every other day they throw it up. Will switching to this food help with that? Thank you!
Answer by ChewyOct 25, 2017
We encourage pet parents to consult with a veterinarian to make sure this is the best fit for your pet and their current treatment plan.

Royal Canin S/O

I am so very pleased that you carry and I am able to purchase this product and the canned wet food also. Our car Rerun has had quite a history of crystals in his urine and bladder. He had surgery to remove crystals that we to big to pass and his bladder was blocked. $3,000 later he has been maintaing and doing very well on this product, it is really necessary for him as this is all he can eat to stop the serlite crystals that his body produces. Thank you !!

cats love it

I switched from the regular Urinary dry food to the moderate calorie one because my cats free feed, and the one who should weigh 17 pounds weighs 20 pounds - he's still very athletic, but I don't want him stodgy. And my floofy one weighs 11 pounds and should only weigh 10. So I swapped this in, no mixing, and it is just as popular. The puma prefers his wet food (he gets most of a can a day) but the floof actually prefers the kibble. So if they don't increase the amount they eat, this should help shed the pounds.

Love the Auto ship

This helps out so much when you are a busy fur mama and human mama. Customer services helped me get the information I needed to get this for my middle cat. He has a bladder urinary system issue. This is the only one that works well for him and does not give him blockages because after two trips to the vet and almost 1000 bucks in vet bills. I happy fur mama!

Wish I knew

The food is good, but they do seem to eat a lot more. My only issue is that I never knew this existed until I spoke with someone at the vet clinic. Walter, (the only one who actually needs this food) was gaining weight, they mentioned the moderate calorie version. When you search for the royal canin SO, just the regular comes up. You actually have to put in moderate calorie. It should just pop up when you search royal canin. Besides that and eating more, I recommend it.

My cat has crystals in his urine

My cat is a picky eater and I was afraid he would not eat this food the vet recommended. He scarfs it down! I also feed him the wet food of the same brand, which he also eats readily.

Finicky cat enjoys this dry food.

It is a special diet food, low calorie and urinary diet. The cat had no problem eating this without mixing it with his old food, he enjoyed it right away.

Healthy & Yummy for my cat!

My cat had issues with urinary struvite crystals. Our vet recommended putting her on this diet to dissolve those crystals, and it worked quickly to help her. The price tag is high so we tried putting her back on "normal" food at once point... but she ended up forming struvite crystals again and was in a lot of pain. Our vet recommended keeping her on this diet to avoid further issues and potential surgeries if her problems got worse. We have kept her on this diet since then (for about 2 1/2 years) and she has been happy and healthy. She LOVES this food too, always running to get it as soon as we scoop out her breakfast or dinner. It's expensive to buy this high quality veterinary food, but ultimately it's worth keeping our cat safe and avoiding paying for surgery. I appreciate that Chewy sells it in huge bags so I only have to purchase it every few months.

Must Find an alternate plan for managing his crytals

It is true that this food has kept my boy's urinary crystals away. However he has been on this Rx food for years now & it has made him fat & he no longer tolerates it & vomits it everyday. I guess that is no surprise since to achieve the right ph balance I have basically been feeding him sheer junk - chock full of corn & gluten as noted by the start of the ingredient list (Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Wheat Gluten). Honestly would any of us pet owners eat this junk? No way! Have argued with 2 different vets over this & they insist there are only 3 effective brands for controlling crystals & all have these similar ingredients. This is the 2nd brand out of 3 that he no longer tolerates so I will have to try a different path.

Great food

One of my cats has urinary issues. The vet prescribed Royal Canin wet food. It can get a little pricey so I bought the dry food for urinary issues and he loves it. So now he gets wet food in the evening and this awesome dry food in the morning. He is a happy cat.

It helped my fur baby get well!

My 5 yr old cat had bladder stones. After 4 weeks on this food (and no other food or treats), the stones have completely dissolved, they're gone! I am so incredibly relieved. She will continue with this food, to help prevent future urinary issues. So if your vet suggests trying this food to shrink kidney and/or bladder stones, do it!
