They are compressed under extreme pressure which allows them to keep the shape of a ball without making a mess! As your cat plays and chews the balls, the balls will still keep their shape, but some catnip may come off.

Do these flake apart and make a mess? Can they play with them just the way they are?

I wish I had read reviews before I purchased this product. Like other people have noted, it's a hard compressed ball of catnip--great idea, truly!--but it didn't seem to have any catnip fragrance. None of my cats were interested. I gave them a few days and presented it to them in different ways, but nada. I bought this as a treat for my Siamese who love love loves catnip but it was unfortunately a disappointment. Even after my Shiba stole a ball and crunched it into pieces--still no interest.

My 5 cats (who are catnip crazy cats) gave them a brief sniff and walked away. So figuring they needed a little help to get them going, I took a rasp file and filed these balls in some spots to let some scent loose. It required exertion and considerable effort to make a few flat spots. Still no scent I could detect. But gave again to cats. Not a single one bothered with them as I rolled them past multiple times to no effect. I think the are plastic or colored compressed wood chips. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT.

They did not have a very strong catnip smell

Jasper smelled it and then walked away. When I give him something new with catnip, he usually goes crazy. I had to throw it for him to even treat it like a ball

Way over priced and missed representative. My two cats Charlotte and Angel love catnip and their toy balls... But these were fake compressed green plastic. They wanted absolutely nothing to do with them. They even smelled like plastic to me , not one hint of catnip scent. First time I ever ordered something from chewy that neither they nor I approved of. I should have called for a credit to my next order.

I even shredded one on my cheese grater to get through the outer layer and nothing. Very disappointed in this product. Honestly they didn’t smell like cat nip to me either.
