About Royal Canin Kidney Health for Dogs

Concerned about Your Dog’s Kidney Health?

The healthy functioning of your dog’s kidneys is essential to them living a healthy life. Their kidneys serve as a filtering system that helps remove toxins and waste from blood. You should always work with your veterinarian to monitor your dog’s kidney health.

Support Your Dog’s Quality of Life Through Kidney Health Challenges

Feed a Specific Renal Diet

Your veterinarian can recommend the right diet to support your dog’s kidney function.

Encourage Drinking Water

Make sure that your dog always has fresh and clean water available. Offering them moist food can also support hydration.

Stimulate Your Dog’s Appetite

Offer your dog a nutritional option with different taste, smell, and texture to help ensure food intake, especially for pets with a poor appetite.

How Nutrition Can Help

Your veterinarian may recommend a formula that includes:

EPA + DHA

Featuring EPA + DHA long-chain omega-3 fatty acids to help support renal function.

Antioxidant Complex

Enriched with a blend of antioxidants to promote tissue and cellular health.

Kidney Support

Formulated with low phosphorus and high-quality restricted protein to support renal function, helping to improve quality of life.

Adapted Energy

Adapted energy content to reduce meal volume and help compensate for a decreased appetite.

Add Variety and Remember to Set Autoship

Offering a range of aromas, taste and textures can help ensure palatability and adequate food intake. Also, remember to set Autoship to make sure that your dog always has their veterinarian’s recommended nutrition.

I changed vets. How do I change it on your app

I have a 15 year old toy poodle that has no teeth. She eats small bites Blue Buffalo adult toy breed just fine but the vet has recommended a switch due to a decrease in kidney function. Is the Royal Canin Renal Support S smaller kibble that she will be able to eat?

Answer by ChewyJul 31, 2018
This kibble is meant to be a good size for small to large breeds. The kibble in the Royal Canin renal diets differ in shape. The support S kibble comes in a crescent shape. Because your dog doesn't have teeth, it's recommended to soften the food. Refer to your vet for the best additions (broth, water, wet food) or recommendations for how to deal with this particular medical/dental issue.

Why does it say for supplemental or intermittent use only?

Answer by ChewyJun 14, 2023
The Renal Support formulas have the “intermittent/supplemental feeding” nutritional statement on the packaging because they are low in nutrients like protein and phosphorus. For healthy pets, these products would not meet their nutritional requirements so they cannot say that they are complete and balanced diets. However, a pet with kidney disease requires this low protein and low phosphorus nutritional profile and should be fed a renal-exclusive product. This product can be fed to a renal patient at all times, you would not have to feed other foods or supplements to a pet with kidney disease.

My Maltese’s doesn’t like food. She is the pickiest eater I use ever seen. I was giving her another brand of kidney food due to her kidney issues and she would only eat every third day or so. My vet suggested I switch and try Royal Canin and she’s actually eating her food every day now. She devoured it for the first two weeks and now she picks at it throughout the day but I’m just so excited that she is eating at all!

Willow has been a really picky eater since getting kidney disease, and she decided she didn't like her k/d anymore. She loved the Royal Canin renal "S" from the moment I opened the bag, and now that I'm transitioning her she eats all the R.C. and spits out most of the k/d.

Picky eater really likes it

Sadie has rejected other renal diet foods. Seems that this product's flavor is sufficiently appetizing to overcome her high protein/meat-seeking propensity.

My dog won’t touch it. Just like all the other diets for chronic kidney disease. My rating is a reflection of my dissatisfaction with the fact they cannot create a prescription diet that is reasonable in cost, and that pets will readily eat.

My almost 16 year old girl, Debbie, has been super picky with what she eats lately. After talking to my vet, we decided to give the Royal Canin Renal diet a try. All I can say is WOW! She actually cleans her bowl with this food. The cute thing is the kibbles are shaped like little kidneys!

Slightly better than the canned stuff

If I cover this in enough broth, my dog will eat it but then that sort of defeats the purpose of a prescription diet.
