Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants

What About Enviromental Irritants

Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Dog

We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

  • Great Product!

    By on

After years of chronic diarrhea and changing food SEVERAL times, I've finally found a food that has eliminated my 12 year old Yorkies sick stomach problem. I've taken him to several vets on numerous occasions over the last 3 years without an explanation (other than IBS) of what was causing his upset stomach. I finally took him off all "dog food" and tried cooking organic chicken and rice, that worked for awhile but he was right back to square 1 after about 6 months so a new vet finally prescribed this food (experimentally) and he's been diarrhea free for 3 months now. I pray that he continues to do well on this food but so far, he's done better on this food than any other on the market.

  • No More Skin Issues

My little fur baby has been on this food for several years now. Joker's vet put him on this due to his allergies and it was showing up as skin irritations......constant itching, scratching, licking and hot spots. Since he's been on this food, all of that has stopped....much to my relief and his comfort. And purchasing thru Chewy, I'm saving right at $1.30 per can compared to where I have been purchasing locally. All the way around, I'd call this a win-win for me and my fur baby Joker.

  • Finally something helping my allergic girl!

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

My regular vet had my Shih Tzu/Cocker Spaniel on Apoquel for her allergies. It wasn't helping. I went to our specialized dermatologist/allergy vet and he put her on this food, the dry version and the special treats. She has only been eating this now for just over a week which her and my other Shih Tzu absolutely love and she is finally showing an improvement. She also is on antibiotics for yeast dermatitis, Pyoderma, and Otitis externa. My regular vet did not pick this up. I urge everyone with severe allergic pets to see a specialist to help your pet ASAP. I wish I took her sooner. The vet tech gave a wonderful idea. Make this wet food into meatballs and cook in the oven for about 15 minutes to make it crunchy on the outside while still a little moist on the inside. They love their new meatballs! I also had done an on-line saliva test last year that came back telling me she was allergic to everything but lamb and rice. This new vet said those saliva tests do not work at all. A waste of $300. Thought I'd share that with anyone thinking of doing it. … more

  • Gobbled up

    By on

Was worried our dogs would not appreciate the Hydrolyzed product after having their regular food but they gobbled it up and are super excited every morning to have their breakfast. it does seem a little dry and crumbly, I put a small amount of water on it so I can mix it up a little more and hide their meds in it

  • Great service

    By on

Ordered for first time. My vet was contacted immediately for food approval. Package arrived quickly and I'm now on a regular shipment date. No more logging heavy cases from vet to home. Now it's on my porch monthly. I'm saving a bunch as well. Much cheaper then vet office.

  • Good for dogs with intestinal issues!

    By on

It took months of struggling with my puppies' intestinal issues - until my vet put him on this diet - along with the kibble version of this food. Fortunately, he likes it and eats it willingly. He has gained weight, looks great, and no more diarrhea - A great solution for dogs with food sensitivities.

  • This food has worked for our dog with allergies!

    By on

This wet food has worked for our golden retriever with a protein allergy. We have been mixing this with the dry food of the same product for some time now after our vet recommended it when our dog was so sick. He is doing excellent so we are very happy. He also loves the food.

  • DogWithAllergies

    By on

My Shih-Tzu has "beef" allergies. Her veterinarian recommended this and my dog loves it. It was quite costly ordering through the vet and I've been looking for another source for a while now. Finally checked on Chewy and found it at a reasonable price with quick delivery.

  • Poor pink & itchy Ms. Bell

    By on

The adoption agency gave me this product to bring home with Ms Bell whom has some type of allergy. I add this to the Royal Canin dry food... a couple of tablespoons in each feeding and under vets recommendation some fish oil. Just had a recent blood test to pinpoint what she is allergic to and/or cause. In the meantime, this product is making life easier for Ms. Bell and I. She loves the taste!
