How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?
Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.
About Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

Signs of Food Sensitivity
Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants
Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

Seems to be working for IBD
By Meatball on Jan 27, 2021
My 19 month old Ridgeback is entirely healthy except for what appears to be upper GI IBD. I want to avoid steroids if possible, and so have been experimenting with different premium foods. Regardless of the food, she continued to vomit once every 1-3 days. RC Hydrolyzed Protein HP dry helped a good bit, but not completely. Somewhere, I read a comment about a dog who responded well to the canned version, so I got a couple cans from my veterinarian to see what would happen. I gave her one can plus 3 cups dry (moistened) split into 4 meals/day. So far, she has not vomited once! Is it the canned? I don't know, but I'm sticking with this regimen. Chewy team...you are the best
By Alohagirl on Jan 24, 2021
My dog Brady can only eat a special diet. He is 15 years young. When the local place I normally purchase this from had this food on back order and I was down to my last two cans I reached out to chewy. I told them that if I didn’t get this food my dog would be really sick. They worked hard to make sure the vet gave them the prescription they needed To get the food out to me on time. 24 hours I got the food. Well done. Really appreciate the service I received.

Did the job
By BAF44 on Jan 5, 2021
My 12 year old cocker was having "issues." Vet had tried various meds and diet modifications. Had numerous tests done at multiple facilities. Nothing helped and tests were all coming back negative. Vet finally suggested Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Hydrolyzed Protein, canned and dry, which they did not carry in house. Made an initial purchase of both at PetSmart, smaller amounts to test. Abby seemed to tolerate both and coupled with Imodium for a couple of weeks, her stools returned to normal. Took her off the Imodium a couple of weeks ago and, just on the Royal Canin HP she is doing well. I use the canned to supplement the dry, and she is okay with that. My Happy girl ate it all
By Janet on Feb 4, 2021
My 4 year old Golden Retriever is extremely picky and has a sensitive tummy. I cannot tell you how many brands and versions of each brand until this one that she tried, and didn’t want it. Or she’d be fine for a couple days then she’d stop eating it. She is finally eating well for the past month. I wish the food wasn’t so expensive since I don’t have much money. But, she’s worth it!

Wrong Advice
By Elmcg on Feb 4, 2021
After I bought a case at about $100, I had to visit an emergency vet. He. Told me this diet was not for my dog. He needs a gastroenteric diet. So now I have all this food plus the dried. My primary care vet made the call for it. Yes, however it is a good food and my dog liked it but not for her problems. Recommend if you need it for your problems.

Good Food.
By Prissy on Feb 12, 2021
My Vet recommended trying this food to reduce Prissy's allergic reaction to proteins. The transition went well to the Hydrolyzed Protein dog food. She eats it regularly and splits her consumption between dry and wet food pretty evenly. So far I have been able to reduce her intake of Apoquell with out an allergic outbreak.

Good for my Yorkie
By Lulu on Feb 7, 2021
Great product, but very dense pasty texture due to low fat content. My 5 lb Yorkie couldn’t take bites. Added plain broth from boiled chicken breast to make gooey enough for her small mouth. She has gall bladder disease & can’t have fat, so this works out very well. She’s extremely finicky, but loves this mixture!

Perfect purchase..
By Mitch on Feb 12, 2021
got the product we needed, at a reasonable cost, and it was delivered the next day.Really? How did they get it to me that quickly? Not complaining, but did not anticipate it THAT fast. My little guy has GI issues, and is picky about what he eats. we moved him to this product to test for allergies, he loves it.

At least she eats it!
By Anna1228 on Jan 10, 2021
I have a 14 year old Brussels Griffon with severe food allergies. Constantly gassy and lots of indigestion. After switching from Z/D diet to this HP diet there is actually improvement!! She gets fuller and the burping and paw licking has been cut down by 90%! My sweetie is not a picky dog, but the consistency is very thick and a little hard. I have to cut the loaf in small pieces so she doesn't choke. Which makes her eat slower, a good thing. So far I would definitely recommend. If your dog is pickier, the flavor and consistency may be an issue.
