Once the water is up to temperature, it does not need to be unplugged as the heater will maintain the water at 78°F.
Does thermostat stay red or later green

The indicator light lets you know when the water is being heated (red light) and when it is at the proper temperature (green light).

Can this be used in a plastic tank?

This thermostat can be used in a plastic tank as long as the tank is the proper size for it, it is fully submerged at all times, vertical and not touching the gravel or décor.
