This is a starter scratching post for our cat, I didn't want to spend a lot of money in case he had no interest. He likes swatting the little puffballs, and it's a cute item... There is definitely a gap where the posts screw together, but it's a lot more fun to look at than most! He's a pretty big guy and I likely should have chosen a taller post but he still likes to go at it, and it is really stable. I do think he is scratching the couch less...which is the whole point.
