Feeding Instructions

The key to starting a successful bird feeding program is the right food. Just like people, birds have different food preferences. Also, make sure your feeders are filled on a regular basis. If you keep food available, your birds will know to keep coming back to your feeder for more.

Hopper Feeders and Tube Feeders (with large holes) are better for sunflower seed, safflower seed, peanuts and blended seeds.

Finch tube feeders (with small holes) are better for Nyjer seed and finch food.

Platform feeders will accommodate ground feeding birds (such as cardinals, juncos, doves, jays, and sparrows) and other wildlife.

Wagner's Always The First

Always The First

As an industry trailblazer, Wagner's has had many firsts. They were the first company over 80 years ago to sell a bird seed for year-round feeding. Before that, bird feeding was just a winter activity to give wild birds the energy they needed to survive the winter. They've also been the first to market black oil sunflower seed, regional blends, and deluxe and premium bird foods.

About Wagner's

As the oldest and largest privately owned wild bird food company in the USA, Wagner's has been helping bird enthusiasts attract wild birds to their backyards since 1894. With special blends of high-quality, fresh ingredients, their seed mixes have become time-tested favorites for all types of birds across America. They produce many different wild bird foods that are developed to give your feathered friends more of the seeds they love, making your feeders come alive with beautiful songbirds.

Not a good mix for squirrels

By Teresa on Aug 20, 2021

I bought this for backyard squirrels hoping to keep them away from our bird feeder. This mix is more than half dried corn kernels by volume and our squirrels will not touch the corn. In addition, when I researched a little more I discovered that corn has no nutritional value for squirrels. And that peanuts and sunflower seeds should only be fed to them very sparingly. So this entire mix is essentially a non-starter for squirrels. I have since ordered some tree nuts (all in the shell) to give the squirrels a purpose in life, and am looking forward to watching them gnaw and bury them. I'll give them the peanuts and sunflower seeds from this mix occasionally as a treat until it's gone, but won't I bought this for backyard squirrels hoping to keep them away from our bird feeder. It's possible that this mix is good for other critters, but probably not for any that I want in my small city backyard. :) … more

So far only the doves are eating it.

    By lbcos on Aug 22, 2021 top250Contributor

That about sums it up. I hadn't seen any type of squirrel in the 36 years I have lived here, until I saw a chipmunk checking out some cat food I put out for some homeless cats. I like this brand of bird seed, so that's why I bought this food. The doves are eating the seeds and the rest is just left on the ground. This is not to say this might not work well for you.

    Picky Squirrels

By PlatonicIdeal on Jul 4, 2021

It's difficult to review a food one doesn't personally eat; it is like watching a reality cooking show and trying to judge the food based on look and how others react. But the squirrels I put this out for seem to love it. As do the chipmunks and blue jays. They all concentrate on the peanuts and sunflower seeds first, then eventually get around to the corn if nothing else excites them. or sometimes the deer stop by and eat the leftover corn. Best I can say is everything I put out for the critters gets eaten, everyday, even if it is a communal clean-plate effort. The squirrels would probably appreciate some more seeds and nuts, a little less corn, but no complaints have been lodged.

Critters of all types love it

By catluvvur on Jun 30, 2021

I live in the country and have all kinds of critters, some are great and some are a royal pain. However, I try to help feed the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, and sometimes I get a few unwanted ones like coons, possums, and stray cats. But they are all hungry and thirsty.....and all are God's creatures. They love this feed, I add more peanuts in the shells and the ground feeder is empty by the next morning, time to refill it.

Lots of corn and sunflower seeds

    By Dbmiller63 on Jul 6, 2021

My ground squirrels love the sunflower seeds but don't seem to care much for the corn, which there is a lot of. I waited til they stuffed their cheeks full then went and looked to see what was left and most of the sunflowers seeds were gone but now the top of the wall is yellow from all the corn left behind. I will update review if I see any changes.

    Good clean food

By Daria on Jul 22, 2021

This bag of squirrel food is great they gobble it up, but they still prefer to climb into (yes, they open and climb inside) my bird feeders and eat the bird’s seed.

    Good for the Squirrels

By RichC on Jul 23, 2021

Squirrels enjoy it, they don't eat all the corn, but it's good for the deer, and birds too. I would recommend this product for supplemental diet, not main course

    Picky Buggers

By Gabby on Jun 24, 2021

Squirrel didn't like the corn. So I ground it up and fed it to my birds. Some other squirrels may like it so I can't say don't try it. I just seem to have Picky Buggers.

    Squirrel and bird food

By Squirrel on Apr 5, 2021

The sunflower seeds and peanuts in this squirrel/bird food are high quality. Dark and rich in oils. I take the blame for my disappointment in finding corn in the mix. I hadn't paid attention to the ingredients, so my bad. I will not use anything with GMOs as it can lead to leaky gut and other digestive problems and can only assume this is GMO'd corn. I don't want to contribute toward anyone's health problems, including birds, squirrels, or humans, so.... upon arrival of the seed, I spent the whole day picking out the corn. Otherwise, great product.

    Best food ever!

By Bert on May 2, 2021

This is the best squirrel food it has a lot of nuts and sunflower seeds less corn I think is better. I fill the feeder and it’s empty in two days even the blue jays are in there eating.
