So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

Answer by ChewyApr 14, 2020
This BLUE Natural Veterinary Diet HF is made with hydrolyzed salmon.

Is this food made in the USA?
Answer by ChewyNov 11, 2022
This recipe is made in the USA. Many of Blue Buffalo's ingredients, such as most grains and meats, like chicken, beef and turkey come from the United States. Lamb and venison can be free range from the United States or New Zealand. Rabbit is sourced from Europe, and trout can come from the United States or Canada. Where possible Blue's suppliers are instructed to source their ingredients from the United States. Where the ingredients are not readily available in the Unites States, such as many vitamins and minerals, their suppliers will only work with reliable foreign companies, and subject all ingredients to rigorous quality testing.

Helped my cat's IBD and he actually likes it!

My cat has suffered with IBD and food allergies for most of his life, which causes him chronic vomiting and diarrhea. My specialist vet recommended a hydrolyzed diet but I struggled to get him to eat any of them. With the combination of the Blue Buffalo HF wet and dry food (although it took him a week or so to acquire a taste for it), he finally enjoys the food and I am happy to report has not been experiencing any IBD symptoms since he has been on it, fingers crossed. Highly recommend if your cat has IBD or food allergies!

Fail

My cat, Leo, developed some intestinal issues three years ago and ultimately, switching him to a hydrolyzed protein food alleviated his issues. He's been on another brand that only has a dry hydrolyzed food and has been acting hungrier so I worked with my vet to find a wet hydrolyzed protein food to see if that helped him feel full longer. I had to order an entire case of this overpriced food to do a food trial. I received the case yesterday and gave him a little bit for dinner last night. Yes, the appearance is questionable, but Leo--my cat who will chew into any package just to see if it might be something edible and I have to watch like a hawk during mealtime to keep him out of my other cat's food--sniffed it, licked it and walked away from it. I added some warm water and mashed it up and he did end up eating about a quarter of a can. I gave him a bit of his normal food which he ate. Twelve hours later he's having a full-blown flare of his intestinal issues, showing signs of pain and refusing to eat his breakfast. I spent more than $80, used less than one can and now will probably end up with a vet bill on top of it. To say I'm unhappy about this food is an understatement and I will never buy any food this company makes ever again. Your mileage may vary but I've had a very bad experience with this food.

My cat LOVES this food!

My cat is 18 years old, has only 1 tooth left, but still has a healthy appetite and lifestyle. She loves to hunt rabbits and birds, and occasionally brings one indoors. (We usually rescue the prey alive.) We began using HF wet food due to her vomiting nearly all other foods. She immediately took to the HF canned food - we do slice & dice it for her as she refuses pate-textured food. She loves this food and especially takes to the oily liquid in it as well. We understand that Blue Buffalo is working on quality control for this food. We appreciate this and eagerly look forward to it being available again!

Negative reviews are almost negligent

Out of the seemingly only 2 options we have for our cat (Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Adult Selected Protein PR Loaf being the other canned food option for ours) this is the only one that he has consistently eaten for 4 years. Would he like better looking/tastier food ? Probably, but those other foods would trigger skin rash 24/7 and other issues while this one keeps him healthy. Negative reviews: I get the texture is quite different from most other cans, and as a human this is not something you'd want to it. That's good, cause no one is asking you to eat your cat's food. So before you lash out giving a bad review based on looks/texture alone, consider that there are few hydrolyzed food options and this is one that many cats prefer and depend on.

My cat loves it!

Yes, the rubbery hockey puck consistency is weird. But my overgroomer loves it. I add a little water and chop it up into bite-sized pieces; the water makes it easier to work with. I don’t understand the negative reviews! Taste is subjective, even for an animal, so if your cat doesn’t like it, why blame the product/company? Try adding water and chopping/mashing it up; maybe your cat would eat it then.

Good option for allergies

I feel bad there are so many bad reviews for this food so im adding a an extra star, but I get it. The texture is weird, but viable hydrolyzed wet canned food options are few and far between for kitties. This food does require a little bit of mashing with a fork and then some added water to get to a traditional pate. My cats do like it and eat this food twice a day without any issues. They also get dry food as well. I switched to this when canned PV royal canine became unattainable.

Mash it up for better texture

4 stars because it's not my cat's favorite and takes a little effort to prep, but it seems to help his allergies, so it's doing its job. Yes, the texture is weird - sort of dense and jiggly. But! It became more appealing to my cat (he doesn't love it, but he eats it) when I started mashing it up. I use a butter knife to chop up his portion into smaller pieces (see pic) and then I use the flat side of the knife to really mash the pieces until it's more like a typical pate texture (see other pic). I just wanted to share in case it helps someone else, I know hydrolyzed choices are limited.

Bad experience all around

So, my sick kitty is now on a veterinary diet. This brand was the only SOFT food I was able to find within his restrictions on chewy. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it in just a can so I had to buy an entire case for over $80!!!! I shouldn't have done it, but I was desperate for my kitty to have a mixture of hard and soft food. This food looks gross. It's almost grey in color. It's almost impossible to even mix it and when I was able to mix it, it was big clumps. He won't eat it and now I'm stuck with a case of it. I would think it was old and outdated but it isn't, it's just bad food. LEARN from my mistake--when trying new foods for your animals DONT ORDER if you can't buy it in small quantities. I should have gone to a pet store first to look for one can.

Blue Buffalo HP Cat Food - Jamon Hates It !

I am sure this prescription cat food is good for it's intended purposes. My reason was for possible thyroid issues/vomiting issues. I left this cat food down for him for 2 1/2 days and he did not touch it. Being an old cat, I did not want to stress him out any longer. I called Chewy and they were GREAT!! They said to donate it to a charity/rescue and they will credit my account. I was thrilled. I did find some other "tummy sensitive" cat food he likes. Jamon is the love of my life and I cannot imagine life without him. He is 12. Thank you Chewy.
