About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

What flavor is this food

Answer by ChewyApr 14, 2020
This BLUE Natural Veterinary Diet HF is made with hydrolyzed salmon.

Is this food made in the USA?

Answer by ChewyNov 11, 2022
This recipe is made in the USA. Many of Blue Buffalo's ingredients, such as most grains and meats, like chicken, beef and turkey come from the United States. Lamb and venison can be free range from the United States or New Zealand. Rabbit is sourced from Europe, and trout can come from the United States or Canada. Where possible Blue's suppliers are instructed to source their ingredients from the United States. Where the ingredients are not readily available in the Unites States, such as many vitamins and minerals, their suppliers will only work with reliable foreign companies, and subject all ingredients to rigorous quality testing.

As many others have noted online, this food is terrible. My cat won't touch it, and that's probably a good thing. It would probably make him sick. There is a reason you can only buy it by the case. There can't be many repeat customers. I tried it as an alternative to Hill's z/d now that Hill's has changed the formula. I don't understand why Royal Canin and Purina, both of which make good dry hydrolyzed cat food, don't offer wet versions. Hill's and Blue Buffalo are the only two choices for wet hydrolyzed cat food. Blue Buffalo is awful, and Hill's ruined a good product by changing the formula. I think the presence of fish protein and fish oil is the problem with both of these. Hill's z/d didn't use to contain fish ingredients, but it does now. Obviously, this salmon-based Blue Buffalo contains fish. I don't think fish-based foods are well tolerated by many cats with food allergies.

I bought a case of Blue Buffalo hydrolyzed food in December. Leo has a serious protein allergy. The food arrived cold...because it's December. But as the cans have warmed, the food remained a cold brown clump. It isn't a puree, its a clump. When I mush it, the food just falls apart. So disturbing because this brand is so expensive and there's no recourse.

My cat, who has allergy problems, vomited the first bite of this food. I'm tired of wasting my time and money, and I'm worried about what they put in these expensive foods that even stray cats won't eat. What kind of animal do they test it on before releasing it to the market??? It's a shame I have to return it, but I have no choice. I've tried hydrolyzed dry and wet food, and I haven't had any success with my cat.

For my cat Sadie this prescription food works for Sadie’s IBD and contains none of her allergens. It does have a texture that is hard to give it a texture she likes, but heating it 3-5 seconds in microwave softens it. Sadie has been on Blue Buffalo HF for about a year and she is doing well.

Made with the intention of tires

I'm not entirely positive where "chunks" came from in this description, but probably because this isn't able to be classified as pate considering the consistency. Blue Buffalo must have taken inspiration from a blown tire on the side of the freeway in order to come up with whatever now plagues my poor cats bowl. My two cats with no dietary restrictions are horrified that I'd consider serving this to them. The one who I got this for hates pate so I didnt know how she'd react, but she did try to eat this, she really did. There was a lot of licking, a lot of sniffing, and some more licking as she tried to get through the dense slab of cat food esq like spam. I cannot give this 1 star yet because she is still trying to eat it, but she's also very stubborn for a wet food she's allowed to eat, which hasn't occurred since the diagnosis. I can only ask all three for forgiveness at this point as we try and find something that works. My pleas may fall on deaf ears and one of the ones without restrictions looks like she plans to leave me a present on my pillow as retaliation. I cannot blame her. Please pray for the litter box and myself.

All of the other food and treats were HP chicken liver and my cats would taste the other brand of canned food and leave half of it. I got this because it was a different flavor. They licked it and walked away. I put it out for them for a week and they wouldn’t touch it. Now I have 23 cans of food that my cats won’t touch.

There aren’t enough treats in the world to entice your cat to eat this. My cat, who I’ve caught eating plastic, rice, and garbage, refuses to even look at it. They sell this stuff in such large quantities because they would never have repeat customers on their own merits. Save your money and ask your vet is if there is any other hydrolyzed protein diet that can fit their needs.

Smell, consistency, time to prep

Most of the reviews are negative for the same reasons. The rating is low due to the high rejection rate. Our Vet recommended this for a GI diet with chicken allergy

Most of the reviews are negative for the same reasons. The rating is low due to the high rejection rate. Our Vet recommended this for a GI diet with chicken allergy. Said give two cans a day. One tablespoon wasn’t acceptable. I can’t conceive why Blue Buffalo makes this food. Many owners are desperate for a solution like we were. Find something else.

Keeps my cat away from the vet

My cat's vet prescribed hydrolyzed food for her in an attempt to prevent her ana! glands from getting clogged up and having to bring her in to have them drained

My cat's vet prescribed hydrolyzed food for her in an attempt to prevent her ana! glands from getting clogged up and having to bring her in to have them drained. She also has issues with constipation so I have to give her some soft food every day mixed with a dose of psyllium powder and some dehydrated pumpkin powder and blue buffalo is the only soft hydrolyzed cat food available. Yes it has a bit of a strange texture and looks weird in the can, but my cat doesn't care after I add a splash of water and mash it with a fork to a pate like consistency before adding in the psyllium powder and pumpkin powder. The other two meals I give her every day is the blue buffalo hydrolyzed food kibble. This method has worked well for her and has not only kept her out of the veterinarian office but the severe dandruff issue she had has also dramatically improved. Without this she would not be well considering there isn't any prescription kibble available that's both high fiber and hydrolyzed.

Consistency is not normal

I thought it would be like a pate but its more like a gel. Cat won't eat it. She sniffs it and walks away. I have other cats and they sniff it and walk away
