So... I've had the Booda Dome litter box for my cat for over a decade. It has been a brilliant box compared to an open rectangle one or even a hooded rectangle one. I literally bought one in 2009 and am still using the same box. It's held up great for 3 moves. At this point it's starting to show a small amount of wear on the bottom of the tray since I don't use litter bags and I have recently switched over to Crystal litter because I can't deal with the smell of the clay litter anymore. At initial purchase, my cat was 2 years old and 14lbs and it fit her great. She is now 16yo and 10lbs and it still works great for her. My only complaint is that the stairs really don't help reduce the litter, but that's not why we bought it. Overall- great litter box.
I liked the look, the privacy for my cats, and the little stairs which do help clean their paws off - however, the litter area is too small for larger cats (9-10 lbs +) in my opinion. Sometimes their urine goes through the corner at the top and trickles down to the bottom. Also the top does not easily fit onto the bottom.
So, both my cats were having issues with the top entry box I had. One started refusing to use it and going wherever she pleased, fun times right? So, my search began for the perfect litter box! I wanted something with a hood, but not a door, something that kept litter inside of it, something easy to clean, and something my cats would actually use! So, I gave this booda a chance. I've had it for a few weeks and I'm pleased! They both use it, it keeps most of the litter inside of it, not as well as the top entry but way better than a hoodless box. My complaints: chewy taped it shut so it wouldn't break, I assume, and the tape stuck to it which isn't a big deal to me as my box is hidden. It's rounded so cleaning it is a bit tricky. The lid doesn't latch so any pesky dogs that really want to can and will find their way into it with no problem. Overall I'm happy with it. I would totally buy it again.
I think this litter box is great if #1 you have the space for it (it’s very large) and #2 if your cat doesn’t really track litter as they walk off. I would imagine this is good though for a cat who kicks litter around…it seals pretty nicely but you have to make sure to line up the top and bottom perfectly. We actually got this litter box thinking that the stairs would get our cat to track less litter around the house as she walked off, but she wound up just leaping over the stairs (sometimes making a worse mess), getting litter all over them in the process and all outside of the box as she walked off. We wound up switching back to our old litter box because it was smaller and we did not see much difference. We’re in an apartment, so the size was too much considering our feet still had litter stuck to them at the end of the day lol
I had a Booda Dome in the past, so when my extra large Boi had trouble fitting in the top entry we were using, I decided to go back to Booda. This is the same size as the old one, but not the same quality. It is not as solid. The top takes some wiggling to sit all the way down. The little nubs that are supposed to hold the filter in place are poorly molded and misshaped. The filter is difficult to place, and doesn't stay there. I've also noticed that the replacement filters offered by Chewy are not the correct shape, there are many reviews that point this out. Hopefully that will change by the time I need one. All that being said, this is better for my bigger cat. It also has reduced tracking/dust from the Catalyst litter we use.
Altho this is recommended for a senior cat getting up the ramp and then down into the litter box area was not something mine wanted to do. Also would have to fill with a lot of litter. I was hoping for a closed box for my senior who pees a lot - but alas she prefers the ease of the open tray. Finally, it is BIG. Too big for a corner of my apartment - might work with the right cat in the right home.
The first dome we got was in 2007 when we rescued two young cats. This is the dome we got very recently to replace the first because we thought so many years of cleaning and not using liners could have thinned the bottom. The new dome was not as heavy duty as the original from 2007, however it works very well as there is no scattered litter and our remaining 15 year old girl does not take out the charcoal filter as so many have complained of. The design is very good.
I was hoping this would work for my disabled kitten, who cannot use her back legs. Unfortunately this too small for her. The box area is opening and the litter area are just too small for her to get in and do her business. I donated it to a rescue
At first I was disappointed that I couldn't find any of the rectangular, hooded litter boxes. I have 2 but I need another one. I bought this and put it in the room with the other 2 boxes and my cats definitely prefer this Dome. Now I have to get 2 more and get rid of the rectangles.
I like this box because it’s enclosed and prevents litter tracking. The one thing I will warn is that you will want to put a mat down if you’re worried about getting 100% of litter. It doesn’t get everything but does catch most of it by walking down the steps.
