Gerbil Bedding, Litter & Accessories

To keep your gerbil happy and your cage smelling fresh, you'll need to get some good gerbil litter and bedding to line your cage with. Chewy carries all the best gerbil litter and bedding types and brands, so you'll have no trouble finding the right material for the bottom of your cage. Here are a few things to know before choosing a new gerbil bedding for your habitat.

The best gerbil bedding and litter material will be dust-free, absorbent, and comfortable for your pet. Most paper bedding for small animals has all these attributes and comes with the added benefit of being compostable and biodegradable, too. You can find paper bedding in many different textures and piece sizes, and it comes in lots of fun colors, as well. Paper bedding also saves on fuel use by being lightweight, and some of it is made from recycled pulp to reduce the strain on the environment. You can also use shredded paper as a cheap bedding material, but make sure to use ink-free or non-toxic printed paper and avoid newsprint for safety. Hay makes a nice litter for gerbils, too, they love to make nests with it and munch it, but it lacks absorbency and may cause odor to build up. Try mixing paper bedding in with hay to get the best of both worlds.

Avoid gerbil litter and bedding made from cedar or unprocessed pine shavings, as their aromatic oils can cause respiratory distress in your pets. Soft aspen shavings are dust-free, odor-free and suitable for gerbils, but they can be less absorbent than paper and may not reduce odor as well. You can also use kiln-dried pine shavings that are free from harmful aromatic oils, or try a product made from eco-friendly pelleted wheat straw. There are also some "fluffy" beddings made from cotton or spun polyester, but you should avoid these since they can case blockages if ingested or tangle around your pet's feet.

Whatever you choose to use to line your gerbil cage, you'll find great deals on bedding, gerbil food, gerbil toys and all your other gerbil supplies at Chewy.com. Shop our wide selection of gerbil litter and bedding and stock up on loads of your little pet's favorite type!

Frequently Asked Questions about Gerbil Bedding, Litter & Accessories

What do you put on the bottom of a gerbil cage?

Put a safe, odor-free and absorbent small animal bedding material on the bottom of your gerbil cage. Paper bedding is usually the material of choice, but you can also use aspen wood shavings or a mix of hay and paper to line your cage. Be sure to choose something that makes burrowing easy and fill to at least a 6-7-inch depth. Some people use litter pellets to line the bottom of the cage for extra absorbency, too, but always include bedding on top if you do. You can use this same bedding material in the litter box, if you're using one, or choose a compact pelleted small animal litter to make spotting waste and scooping easier.

What is the difference between gerbil litter and bedding?

The difference between gerbil litter and bedding is that you put gerbil litter in a litter box for elimination and bedding at the bottom of the cage for resting, digging and playing. If you do not have a gerbil litter box, your gerbil bedding will serve the same function as gerbil litter, catching waste and absorbing moisture and odor. The best substrates for gerbil bedding often work well in a litter box, as well.

Do gerbils need litter and bedding?

Gerbils do need bedding and litter, but you can just use bedding in your gerbil cage if your small pet isn't litter box-trained. If you do have a litter box in your gerbil habitat, it is usually recommended that you fill it with a different type of litter than you are using as bedding. This will help avoid confusion about where your gerbil is supposed to eliminate. Be sure to choose gerbil bedding and litter material that is specifically labeled for use by gerbils, as some other substrates may be hazardous for your pet.
