This DIY Foot Mask Is the Perfect Doggy-and-Me Summer “Pawdicure” Treatment

To me, there is hardly anything more soothing than a pedicure—or spending time with my two French Bulldogs, Weston and Fira. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to head out to the spa as of late (something which I’m sure many of you can relate to!). But, thankfully, I’ve still been able to put my best foot forward thanks to this super easy DIY foot mask. And the best part? It’s also a great way to soothe and efficiently moisturize your pup’s hard-working paws.

I must say, after applying this soothing salve, my feet have never felt more nourished, softer and totally sandal-ready. Professional pedicure, who?! Plus, anything that allows me to combine pampering and time with my pups is an automatic win in my book. This DIY foot mask provides just that as it can also be used as a “pawdicure” of sorts to remedy dry, cracked dog paws—an unfortunate side effect of summertime and namely the hot, sun-soaked pavement that comes along with it.

Ready to schedule a summer spa day with your dog? Here’s what you’ll need. All of these items can easily be found at your local beauty supply store, health food store or crafts store (I always like to support my local small businesses!).

• 1/4 cup shea butter
• 1/4 cup coconut oil
• 1/4 cup beeswax pellets*
• 1 tsp vitamin E oil

*If you can’t find beeswax pellets, a block of beeswax or even a beeswax candle works just as well. Grate into small pieces, so it’s easier to melt.

• Large glass jar or Mason jar
• Smaller jar with cover for storage
• Spoon

Now that everything is measured and ready to go, let’s get to the pup-friendly pampering!

First, place your large glass jar in a medium-sized pot. Begin filling the pot with water. Once the water is approximately halfway up the length of the jar, remove the jar. (This helps you see how much water you need. If you put in too much, the jar could float and tip over.) Bring the water to boil.

While that’s heating up, add all your ingredients to your jar—the Mason jar, in my case.

Beeswax is a such multi-tasking ingredient. Because it’s a humectant, it can help your skin retain moisture, softening dry skin. It may also aid in cellular reconstruction, thanks to the vitamin A it contains. Did I mention that it may also have anti-inflammatory effects? Whew! What can’t this stuff do? Now wonder beeswax can be found in many of your lotions, moisturizers and lip products.

And next up, we have shea butter. Derived from the nuts of karite trees, you probably also own a few beauty products that boast this supple cream. It’s full of fatty acids, which are great for smoothing skin.

Coconut oil is similarly a moisturizing-powerhouse, while vitamin E can boost skin health and is an essential vitamin for dogs.

Ok, let’s get back to our boiling pot…

Once the water is boiling, reduce heat to low so it’s just simmering. Gently drop your Mason jar into simmering water, taking care that no water splashes inside. This double boiler method is perfect for slowly melting ingredients. The controlled heat prevents the contents from burning or sticking to the bottom. (Caution—do not microwave; this recipe is for stovetop only.)

Stir continuously for about 8-10 minutes until all ingredients are melted and the mixture is smooth.

It might be tempting to add a few drops of scented essential oil but try to resist. Dogs have much more sensitive snouts than ours, as we know, and many essential oils can be unsafe for both cats and canines—even when used topically.

Once all of the ingredients melt into a liquid, turn off the heat and pour the mixture into your small glass jar. Allow to cool. It will harden into a nice, creamy balm, ready for all your (and your dog’s) self-care needs.

Now, it’s finally time to pamper yourselves!

Before bedtime, I slathered a dollop all over my feet and put on a pair of fuzzy socks. The texture is super rich, thick and emollient—a perfect healing treatment for my dry heels.

In the morning, wash away any remaining traces of the DIY foot mask that may linger on your newly softened feet with an oil-based cleanser. (You don’t want to end up slipping and sliding on any hardwood floors!)

When walking your dog during hot weather, it’s always best to try to avoid hot pavements if at all possible. That harsh, heated cement or asphalt can really make your pup’s paws quite rough and irritated.

So, after applying the salve to my own feet, I scooped out a tiny amount and gave Fira a mini pawdicure by gently rubbing it onto the pads of her paws thoroughly and then dabbing off any excess. Be sure to take your time massaging this nutrient-rich balm onto your own doggo’s paws—it will make their little tootsies so soft!

This all-natural DIY treatment will easily last you a few more at-home pamper sessions. My favorite part is that it’s fragrance-free (definitely a plus for those with sensitive skin), contains no preservatives and is something you and your pup can share together. After all, you and your fur babies deserve the extra TLC!
