For pregnant females increase feed intake gradually starting at beginning of gestation period. By the end of the 9 week gestation period, an increase of 25 - 50% above normal maintenance energy is usually required.
Lactating females should be given free access to food until the kittens are weaned. Energy requirements vary depending on breed and litter size.
When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.
Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.
Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.
No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.
Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.
I love this food for my cats. My 12 year old cat has been acting like a kitten since we put her on this. My second oldest is a little more picky about it but she still eats it and I like that it's good for her. The youngest eats everything but he's happy with it too. Finding something everyone will eat is impossible so I'll take it.
My cat never liked wet food (like, any wet food i tried them all) so it was important for me to find a good dry food option that would still have plenty of protein and good ingredients! I’m happy to say my cat really likes this food so far.
My cats have been on this food for 3 years. The aroma smells like fresh ingredients and the kibble is a perfect size. I have been using this in conjunction with an IBS prescription food. The results have been great.
We have two cats (4 months old). They love both the chicken and salmon formula(s) of this brand. I love that the ingredients are so closely lined with how they would eat in the wild. No digestive or transition issues either!
I rescued 2 hedgehogs last year that were eating meow mix (not good for them) they were in horrible condition. Skin, quill loss, urine and feces horrific smell, overweight and not as active as they should be! After switching them to this food it started getting better. Once completely switched to this and no other cat food (took time to get them fully switched) everything changed for the better. Especially smell wise which makes sense since hedgehogs are allergic/intolerant to grains. Their skin, quills , energy and again smell is all improved for the better. Honestly the smell was insane before. Now not so much. This cat food along with hedgehog food (they still don’t eat the hedgehog food but it is still given with this food as option) and now other insects and veggies has greatly improved their quality of life and probably saved their life. For hedgehogs and for cats that are grain intolerant I strongly recommend this brand and type (chicken and blueberry is definitely the flavor to buy!!!!) it is the only brand of cat food I would recommend. The improved smell of their urine and feces is worth the price. I buy a big bag lasts 6 months for 2 (I even give to cat and other hedgehog owners to see if their current food is causing problems). This is by far the best food I’ve ever used for hedgehogs including food made for hedgehogs!!!! Your hedgehogs and nose will thank you
None of my four cats liked it. Ingredients seem fine, but it was not tried again after the first bite. But the raccoons and opossums ate it. Will not be purchased again.
My cat who had GI problem loves it. He is doing good so far
My cat goes bonkers for this. We were feeding him another dried food, which he ate diligently. But he truly loves FirstMate. Gobbles it up. It's a little pricier, but worth it.
Very high protein food with minimal extra ingredients, which is important for a cat's metabolism. Reasonably priced, given its high quality. My three cats, ranging from 1 to 9 years old, all enjoy it.
A minimal ingredient food, a solid company (no recalls as of this post), 'meal' over whole foods which some feel isn't good, the product smelled good and my cat loved it. It is a big kibble, more like a cat treat (and I used them like this or would need to chop it up for my cat). HOWEVER, it does contain rosemary (the ingredient list was incorrect on Chewy.com), which is harmful to pets, regardless of who wants to say it's 'okay.' Perhaps it was not there in the past. I would encourage First Mate to drop the toxic use of it, for a cleaner food... if so, I would GLADLY make this my food of choice.) As such, it can't be used and was returned.
