Food sensitivities and intolerance are potentially serious problems that can result in sensitive or irritated skin, coat and ear conditions or even gastrointestinal upset. Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed Prescription Diet z/d clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your dog's skin and food sensitivities. In fact, z/d is clinically proven nutrition to help avoid adverse reactions to food.

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Best of the hydrolyzed protein formulas.
By Scanchick on Jan 12, 2021
After adopting my white pit bull, Maizy last year, I started noticing her increasingly frequent bouts of diarrhea and/or vomiting. Within 6 months of adopting my 2 yr old girl, she started becoming completely anorexic and after many veterinary consults and emergency vet treatments for i.v. fluids and testing (costing over $4k in 3 monts), it was decided that she had food allergies and could only eat hydrolyzed protein based diet. I have tried all of the veterinary prescribed hydrolyzed diets available and Hills Z/D formula is the most palatable to my pup in both dry and wet formulas. The wet food has the smoothest and easiest texture to mix with her dry food, especially if mixed with some warm water first, before adding to dry kibble. The Royal Canon and Purina H/A formulas are soy based and are very dry and much less palatable to my dog. The dry kibble she liked the best was the Forza10 Colon diet that I tried at first which was miraculous in controlling the diarrhea but the big negative for me was the large and frequent bowel movements it gave her (i.e. at least 5 bm's/day!). I wanted to try the Blue buffalo H/A formula, but my vet won't prescribe it secondary to it being grain free and associated with causing heart failure. So, Z/D has turned out to be the best for my sensitive girl! … more

Best Canned Dog Food
By Toby on Feb 2, 2021
My puppy loves this canned dog food. I should note that he is really picky with his food and it was always tricky to put him on a blended diet. Once our vet introduced this to him, he is super happy. Especially when for the health issues he has to be on this for at least 4 weeks. It smells so much better than any other canned food we have used before.

Great choice for skin and belly sensitivity
By Steps on Feb 12, 2021
Jaxson is devouring this food! Bravo! He doesn’t hesitate to eat anymore and doesn’t let it just sit around. He also has reduced the licking which was my main goal. He has skin tags so I hope the change will help reduce those after these few are removed.

After 5 months you decide ....maybe I don’t like this food
By Janice on Dec 21, 2020
Marshmallow was started on Hills ZD for GI and Allergy issues. She has done well on it. We rescued her 6 months ago. She has always been food driven and does Eskie twills and jumps and dives for meal time. So after 5 months on ZD I placed my first auto delivery order. What does she do...two days before her order arrived she no longer dances nor eats until she gets really hungry. She did have some GI issues for several days after a neighbor gave her a treat. I am hoping this is temporary and she’ll soon be back to dancing for her ZD. If not I will speak to her vet about other options. Very pleased with the service we receive from Chewy’s.

Mia loves this food
By Bobbi on Feb 18, 2021
Switched Mia’s, my Havanese, dog food to Hill’s. It was a battle every morning to get her to eat her Royal Canin dog food. She loves this new food and licks her bowl clean. Both my Havanese love the dog treats too.

Great to use as topper for kibble for low gi diet dogs
By JenJen on Jan 13, 2021
My picky dog loves this canned food. We were very concerned when she was prescribed a restrictive diet. This food met our needs for a low gi/allergen free diet and tastes good too. We also tried Royal Canine and she liked that one also. Both brands are very dense which makes it somewhat challenging to mix into kibble.

At last, we finally found a food Levi can eat
By Borderline on Nov 16, 2020
My Catahula Levi has suffered 2 long yrs with major stomach and colon problems. He’s had every test but we can only suspect it’s a combination of IBS and colitis. Poor guy has had severe poisoning as a puppy and a shattered leg when we first adopted him so he’s been a fighter from the start. I can’t love him enough to move mountains to make his life the best it can be.

It's very rich
By blonde0954 on Nov 24, 2020
I have a 20 yr old spaniel who is recovering from colitis. The vet recommended this to help him get back to normal eating. At first, he really liked it, but I noticed that he ate slowly and eventually would not eat it at all. Changed over to the kibble version and he really likes it. I think this may just be too thick for him to enjoy. As for the colitis, it didn't help too much, but the dog is very old so it may not be the food.

I use this to get my dog to take his medication and it works like a charm! He loves it! Showing improvement in his allergies for the first time in years!

Great for dogs with strict diets
By kay00dee on Jan 5, 2021
My chihuahua has a lot of skin allergies and food sensitivities, and it took us a few years to find the right diet for him. This z/d diet is great for his sensitive stomach, and I've noticed less paw licking after meals.
