About Hill's Prescription Diet GI Biome Food for Dogs

Hill’s GI Biome Diet

Hill’s Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome dog food takes a different approach to digestive care. Each formula uses a specific blend of active fibers, known as ActivBiome+, to help your dog’s stomach break down food more efficiently and promote healthier stools and regularity. It also contains Hill’s S+OX Shield ingredients, formulated to promote urinary health.

Activate the Gut Microbiome

When it comes to canine digestive health, the balance between good and bad bacteria is key. Promoting the growth of good bacteria helps keep problematic bacteria in check and supports ongoing digestive well-being.

Know the Signs of Digestive Issues

If you notice vomiting, diarrhea or soft stools, straining, stomach gurgling, flatulence, appetite changes, lethargy or depression in your dog, it may be from digestive trouble. See your vet for more insight and see if changing foods can help.

Risk Factors

Many things can trigger digestive issues in your pup, including food sensitivities, inflammation and bacterial, viral or parasite infections. Your vet can help determine what’s causing the trouble and figure out how diet can play a role.

Is this dog food made in the United States? Where are the ingredients sourced?
Answer by ChewyMar 15, 2021
Hills is manufactured in the United States. We source raw materials only from countries where there are reliable safety procedures in place, primarily in the United States, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and several European countries.

Does this food cause extra thirst?
Answer by ChewyNov 23, 2020
The manufacturer does not currently have any records on side effects like extra thirst. We recommend consulting your veterinarian if you are unsure about possible side effects, as they have an entirely different industry insight, and they can give you a second opinion based on both professional experience and research.

Asking for Great Dane breed - do you have information about the Calcium/ Phosphorus ratio? I didn't see it in the Guaranteed Analysis tab - thanks in advance
Answer by ChewyOct 16, 2019
This dry dog food formula has a calcium content of 1.18% and a phosphorus content of 0.68% on an dry matter basis.

Can this be used for puppies?
Answer by ChewyNov 29, 2019
Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that Hill's Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome Canine provides complete and balanced nutrition for maintenance of adult dogs. It would not be appropriate for puppies. Due to your pets specific health concern, we recommend consulting your Veterinarian to see what would be the safest fit for your pets current treatment plan.

If you have a tummy issue, this works

Our 1 1/2 year old rescue, red heeler mix, suddenly started experiencing soft stools that transitioned into constant soft stools and diarrhea. We had to take her off of her Purina ProPlan at the vet's recommendation and select a digestive prescription diet. We decided on Biome, and within 2 days her stools were solid (and prolific, which I have come to learn is in large part due to the fiber content of this food.). We have been through this before with another rescue and had selected ID diet, the results at that time were in no way comparable to what we saw with the Biome. We do not feed her the full amount recommended on the bag as she was having at least 4 large bowel movements each day, she weighs approximately 45 lbs and we feed her 3 times a day (which is a bit of a pain but what the vet suggested) and she gets a total of 2 1/2 cups over the 3 meals. I would definitely recommend Biome if you are struggling with a digestive issue, please know that she was first tested for many different issues in order to rule out a more serious reason for this stool change.

Turned this skeptic into a believer

I don't like presciption diets, as a rule. I prefer to give my dogs food with "better" ingredients. My vet feels the same, so when she suggested this, I knew it wasn't her first choice either. But we had tried acupuncture, a homemade bland diet, feeding 3 times a day, traditional Chinese herbs, slippery elm... everything for my boy's IBD. But lo and behold, this stuff actually works! It helps with the consistency of his stools, reduced his gas, and has almost eliminated his frequent vomiting. He used to eat grass like a cow, and now he only eats it once in a blue moon (and usually because he snatched a tasty poopsicle on our walk). I am so glad that we tried this food, because it really has made a world of difference.

Miracle Food!

We have a 7 year old Labradoodle that is the pickiest eater on the planet. I have tried tons of different dog foods, toppers, frozen delivery foods, and pretty much everything you can think of to get my dog to eat. This is the first food that he will actually eat after seven years of battling to get him to eat. I am thrilled to have finally found a food that he wants. He is like a new dog and he is actually begging to eat now. Thank you for developing a food that clearly has made him feel better and enjoy mealtime.

Took time for it to work, but it’s amazing!

I saw SO many reviews that said “it helped my dog’s stomach and poops in one week!” And I was very discouraged when even after a couple weeks, almost a month, it didn’t seem to be helping. It took about 2 months to see it working how it should! My dog’s stomach issues have been helped and her poops are regular and well formed. Our pup was extremely picky with her previous kibble, hardly eating any and leaving a lot in the bowl. It took time for her to warm up to this new kibble, but she LOVES it and always eats it all up right away! I’m so glad we stuck it out and give it them time it needed to work. I would recommend this to anyone who has a dog that seems like a picky eater due to stomach issues!

Unfortunately my 14 1/2 year-old dog did not do well on this. Perhaps not enough protein (17%)? or other ingredients did not agree with him. He was constipated and lacked his usual level of energy. Did fine once switched back to his regular diet with higher protein level.

Exceptional Dietary Food

My 2 yr old Dane had loose stools from an infection she was licking. The Vet put her on this food and immediately after 1 meal of this mixed in, her poop was solid. I'd recommend this to any dog with loose stools. You need a Veterinarian prescription

Great Product

The vet suggested switching my pup to this food as he was recently diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease. This food has really helped turn his gut health around and hasn't had any stomach issues since the switch! It is pretty expensive but I'm glad it has actually helped.

hopefully this food will ease my dog's issues

Rosie is still struggling with loose stools and I'm hoping after keeping her on this food, she will eventually have normal stools and less diarrhea This is our first bag and it is much more expensive than regular Science Diet but if it eventually works then it is worth it!

I have only been using this just under 2 weeks, but it started working right away and is still working magic. My dog has chronic diarrhea. He'll be fine for 6 or 8 months and then not fine for several months, possibly triggered by him eating things in the yard he shouldn't. A couple rounds of metronidazole usually works, but that's not healthy on a repeated basis. My vet suggested this food and after reading reviews, I decided to try this instead of the GI food i usually get. It really does work!! I'm going to try to work in some of his regular food 50/50, like another reviewer mentioned, but for now I'm just so happy with his picture perfect poops!
