My girls love this food. I usually mix Henhouse Reserve into the pellets. I've gotten compliments on their eggs. People tell me they are the best eggs they ever ate! My hens look great. They haven't had any vent gleet or any other health problems since I started feeding Kalmbach. The eggshells are very hard, and the yolks are bright orange. The reason I looked for new feed is because the pellets in the old feed were dusty and sometimes pulverized. I never have that with Kalmbach. I recommend it !

They originally ate pellets but I could afford some “fancy” chicken feed which was touted as “whole food” and they only ate parts of it. One of my hens had diarrhea the whole time and I finally gave up on the fancy stuff. We switched to this food less than two months ago and not only do they love it, but I just found two eggs in the coop! One of my hens just had a major molt so she’s looking a little rough but her diarrhea has subsided and our other hen has a bright red comb and is feeling good enough to give us some winter eggs. This food is great and affordable!

We’ve had poultry for almost 50 years. First, I’d like to address reviews saying their birds stopped laying when switched to this feed. It’s very rare for chickens to not be affected by a substantial feed change. Most will pause laying. Second, it takes about 30 days to see any real change in birds from feed, unless they’re being starved. On to the review. We’ve been feeding this to our hens for over 30 days and this is what I’ve observed. The feed has an oregano vinegar smell. They readily eat it. Their egg yolks are a gorgeous dark orange due to the marigold extract. The egg shells are solid. The hens have had no decline in health and appear healthy. Having fed MANY poultry feeds, my opinion is this feed is one of the top layer feeds we’ve fed at our farm.

17%is WAY better than 16%

I have been using mostly Purina feeds for about 60 years, but I occasionally try other things just to mix things up a little. Lately I tried a couple of the Kalmbach

I have been using mostly Purina feeds for about 60 years, but I occasionally try other things just to mix things up a little. Lately I tried a couple of the Kalmbach feeds. The All Natural 17% Protein Layer Pellets Chicken Feed is significantly different from Kalmbach 16% All Natural Layer Pellets Chicken Feed. I tried the 16% and the chickens didn't care for it. The 17% looks far better having a yellowish color where the 16% was more of a gray color. The 17% smells nice, almost like molasses. The chickens are far more enthusiastic about eating the 17% stuff. In my opinion the 17% is a much better formula. I might consider buying more of the 17%. I would not buy the 16% again. HOWEVER I prefer to use feed that does NOT contain Trichoderma reesei. I don't know why Kalmbach likes to use this fungus in their feeds when it is known to quickly deteriorate canvas. I can't imagine it serves a useful purpose in a chicken's diet. I wrote to Kalmbach a few months ago and asked about it's purpose for being in the feed, but got no reply. I would probably recommend the product and give it five stars if it did not contain trichoderma reesei.
