Eh... it works I guess
This harness works well in the car but does not do well with walking. If you use the front clip and your dog pulls the whole front of the harness just shifts to the side (I think the buttons are supposed to help hold it, but it never stays buttoned) Overall, the harness works but if your dog pulls I would recommend a different harness.
Now she goes in the car!
We had a pair of boxers, brother and sister, for 10 years. Last winter Buck died unexpectedly and as you can imagine we all were devastated! Stella, his sis missed him alot and really did not want to stay home alone anymore. Buck never liked to ride in the car and he would cry all the time. In January we started to take Stella with us and she loved it! Her old harness, however, left something to be desired. We shopped the internet and found that the Kurgo Harness would be perfect. It fit her snuggly and attached to the seat belt. As a long time Chewy customer, we were please to find a bright red one on the website. It is a great fit, she is comfortable in the back seat and we feel confident she is safe.
I know my pup is safe.
The harness is extremely sturdy and works well with the seatbelt to secure my dog. I definitely feel better with this protecting my dog should we ever end up in an accident.
This is hands-down the best dog harness we’ve ever bought (and we’ve had quite a few)! Outstanding design and quality, and our dog loves it! It is easy to put on and seems comfortable for our dog. The price seemed high but it is more than worth it. I highly recommend it!
Heavy duty, well made but has issues
One positive: when my dog tried very hard to wiggle out of the harness, it was truly wiggle proof. The harness is well made & sturdy but bulky and has issues I didn't like about it. It's heavy due to all the metal on it. I really liked the clip in closure, easier & safer than plastic clips. The instructions neglected to explain the two snap closures on the chest part. Finally figured out it's to fit the chest band to the more comfortable closure. I had to make the harness tighter than I would have liked due to it sliding from side to side as the dog pulled. The worst part was hooking up to the seat belts in the car. They do not fit into the carbiner very easily, then once hooked up the dog could only sit, she really wanted to lie down but that wasn't possible. A friend told me that if I loosen the seat belts up it would have given her more room. Right now I'm not using it, I prefer the regular snap on standard one I have. Might give it one more try with looser seat belt but it's difficult to get the two seat belts into the carbiner. The dog doesn't like this harness at all BUT I must say being so sturdy and wiggle proof I do recomment it.
Excellent for walking and auto travel
This is probably by far the best dog harness on the market, bar none (including Orvis, etc.), for control, durability, comfort (adjusts easily) and appearance (would be nice to have more colors though). It's ideal in medium size for my 42-lb., 28" chest lab/beagle mix, whom I've been training because he's anxious and reactive toward other dogs when he's walking along leashed. Easy to control him with this Kurgo because it has two control points: chest ring (for turning him away) and dorsal loop atop straps over his withers (for restraint and backup). Hardware is all metal and straps are good-quality canvas triple-stitched together and to hardware. Only drawback is for new users: a bit tricky to figure out how to attach clips quickly. I recommend only detaching one of the two shoulder clips, then sliding off over his head and hanging the whole thing up by the chest ring to retain its shape (and your memory of how it goes; after a period of daily use, this will be easier as harness assumes dog's shape more). Directions in included pamphlet are good, but mainly just remember that the stamped print ("Kurgo") end of each clip goes into its holder first when you're putting on harness BUT then to take it off, remove the clip via the non-print side first. For travel in a car, it comes with a short loop attached to a mighty carabiner: just click onto car seat tether and other end to harness's dorsal loop (or vice-versa).
I would not recommend unless you need the harness for a car ride. The Harness size M, was too stiff and heavy for a medium size dog (46 lbs) and ran small. I have used a simpler brand before in order to keep my dog close and under control when passing a dog he may not like.
I've had this harness for a little over a year and bought it on recommendation from a review article that crash tested it. I wanted something safe for traveling with my 16 lb dachshund because she loves car rides and moving around the car. the harness is amazing quality and i personally have no issue with the metal buckles. It is a heavy harness but since my dog is a more substantial small breed, its fine for her. here's my issue- the strap length. I can see the length working for a dog with normal proportions, but for a dachshund with a very long back, this length is incredibly restrictive. i understand that you dont want a ton of length because that defeats the purpose of being strapped in, but I wish it was at least the length of her body so she could easily sit, turn, and lie down without contorting herself and getting stuck. i do feel like shes safe in a crash though and its good for switching from a car harness to a walking harness. i recommend this harness!
The sewing on both of the straps that go down & across your dog's back have some rough spots, and somehow Kurgo decided it would be good to have these rough edges facing inward instead of outward. It is mindboggling that nobody caught this as the flipside of the sewing is smooth. Luckily I have longer-haired dogs, so I'm hoping there's no issue, but I absolutely would NOT buy this product for a short-haired dog. I dragged the surface across my own skin, and it left a trail of parallel scrape marks.
Once I watched the video, putting the harness on Myles was easy. I recommend starting with the shorter seatbelt tie-off. I tried the longer version & Myles got all wound up in the seatbelt. Good deal as you can use the harness to walk your dog as well as for an auto restraint.
