About Kurgo Gear

Kurgo believes that your dog deserves to go everywhere you go, safely and comfortably. Way back in the early 2000s, before dog travel gear was a thing, Kurgo set out to solve a problem: how to keep the family dog from jumping in the front seat of the car. After lots of brainstorming and prototypes, their Backseat Barrier was born. Twenty plus years later, they’re still finding new ways for you and your dog to go together in confidence.

Questions & Answers

Is this harness good for walking/hiking/general wear while running and playing? Or is it more of a walk/car ride harness? I have a 46lb mix that is a puller!

Answer by ChewyJul 17, 2018
The all-steel Nesting Buckle System in this harness is based on the engineering for harnesses used by rock climbers and linesmen ensuring strength and safety. The chest pad and straps are also very comfortable, making this dog car harness great as an everyday walking harness.

My dog hates having to step into harnesses. Does she have to step into this one or is it easily slid on over her head?

Answer by ChewyNov 01, 2018
This is not a step-in harness. The harness clips at the top, on both sides. You can place it on top of the dog, and then feed the rest of the harness through either side of their chest.

Trying to train my dog to walk correctly. I’ve been wrapping a leash around my left hand and holding the clicker also. If he sees someone or something he begins pulling, I need something shorter to keep him at my left side. Can the seatbelt attachment be used to keep him nearby while walking?

Answer by ChewyJun 21, 2018
The 10 inch dog seat belt loop can also be used to keep you dog closer to you during walks.

Can this harness be worn 24/7?

Answer by ChewyOct 02, 2018
Your dog can wear their harness all day but we recommend removing from puppies after each walk and do not leave on all night as they may be able to chew on it. Collars make great tag carries and we firmly believe that all dogs should have id and license tags on them at all times.

The goal of this harness was to protect my dog in a car crash and to provide a full-time harness in addition. Have not yet had a car crash, so can’t confirm it’s effectiveness there. But he’s fine wearing the harness all the time. The only problem is it continues to get looser on its own so I have to keep re tightening it regularly.

I've had this for my dog for a year now. I bought it to replace a previous Kurgo Car Harness I had before. This one slips way more than the one I had before. It seems every time I put it on my dog I need to readjust it. Beyond that, it has held up.

We started taking our 3 dogs for car rides and I didn't like how they just moved all around the car. They weigh between 50 and 65 pounds so they aren't little. This helps keep them a little more in place when used with a seat belt. They still have some movement and can get tangled because you can only adjust the seat belt so much but overall it's much better. They still need work to just sit still. Hopefully time will help with that. My pups need to be safe just as us humans need to be safe.

When I first tried this on my dog, it was really awkward. I thought that my dog would somehow get used to the configuration, so I kept it past the return date. I tried all of the different configurations and they all seemed to pull my dog into an unnatural position. She couldn't really sit forward, so she would have to sit to the side. This makes the harness slide over and bunch up. So if we actually got in an accident, I can't imagine it not hurting her extensively. And that's if she sits still. Most of the time she would panic because she was being trapped in place so she would turn around and then get tangled in the seatbelt. Not only is this dangerous for her because it could be the cause of her death in accident, but it could cause an accident as she's freaking out from being tangled up in the backseat. The last time we tried it: I had to pull over every few minutes to fix it. Not practical at all.

i found this harness to be impossible to fit right on my dog (35 lbs pittie/lab mix 17 in neck 25 in chest, bought her a medium). also, the kind of buckles on this harness were difficult to work on a wiggly dog and i would have found it very annoying to get on and off on a regular basis. i needed to get a refund because it totally did not fit her right at all unfortunately.

I purchased 2 of these harnesses because I could not get the sizing correct. My GSD was inbetween a L and an XL. It is a good harness for securing your dog in a car that has a shoulder strap, although I had to add multiple seatbelt tethers together so that my German Shepherd could sit or lay comfortably in the car. One was definitely not enough. This harness does not work very well at all as a no pull harness. The padded chest plate pulls to the side, basically tripping my GSD, and no amount of adjustments stop it from sliding to the side. I’m glad I purchased it for securing him in the car, but very disappointed. It does not work as a no pull harness.

Tends to run small-didn’t fit

My dog has a 32” chest and the large goes up to 34”. This was still too small for her. The harness is also very heavy. Not something I’d want her to wear very long

This harness seems to be well built, and I have no doubt it might work well for some. However, it can be very difficult to put on, and with our dog that is a problem. The way that the clips are connected lead me to believe they will not separate in the event of an impact, and that is a definite plus. Also, once it is on your pet, it really is limited on how much it can move around, if they can move at all. Unfortunately, we will not be able to use this on our dog and are looking at different options.
