My cats are messy eaters, I bought 2 of these mats. Originally for both my kitties eating station I bought a smaller mat, M/L size and it wasnt the proper size for both my cats as one of them likes to grab the food from his bowl, step away and eat, which ended him up eatinf on the floor. But I now use that smaller mat as their water station else where and it works nicely, no water spill outside the mat. As for this XL food mat, it covers for both my cats and no more food spills outside the mat! Just moved into a home that is a new build. Wanted to be sure and protect my floors. Our girls use a slow feeder which means they take their paws and throw it all over the ground. As far as water goes our tortie was obsessed with flipping the water bowl. We got a 10 lb. dog bowl to stop that. Thinking mat is ideal. Glad I measured and got XL. I would have guessed smaller. I have had a terrible time finding something that works under the cat box. One of my boys gets all four feet in and forgets the relevant part, so I was always cleaning the floor under the mat. The lip on this helps so much and it’s really easy to wipe up or hose off. Now I just need to find liners for a cat box the size of the Titanic!
