What is Neo/Poly/Dex Ophthalmic Ointment?

This is an ointment that is given directly in the eye(s) when your pet has an eye or eyelid infection with inflammation.

What are the benefits of Neo/Poly/Dex Ophthalmic?

  • Can be given safely to most animals.
  • Broad-spectrum action helps to treat different bacteria that are responsible for eye infections.
  • Contains a corticosteroid that can help to relieve related eye swelling and inflammation.

How is this medication given?

Your veterinarian will determine the dose and frequency of dosing that is right for your pet. Apply ointment to the affected eye(s) by placing one hand under and around your pet's chin in order to lift his/her head upward so he/she is looking towards the ceiling. Apply all ointment to the lower lid of the eye without touching the tip of the tube directly to the eye. Gently massage all ointment by helping your pet to blink a couple of times after medication has been applied. Your veterinarian can show you how to apply this medication correctly if needed.

How does this medication work?

There are two antibiotics (Neomycin and polymixin B) that will work to halt bacterial growth and kill the bacteria causing your pets infection. The steroid (dexamethasone) will help to reduce association inflammation by blocking the production of substances that trigger an inflammatory response.
